Beaverhead residents rang out 1934 and welcomed 1935 with watch parties across hundreds of homes. Dillon celebrated at the city hall auditorium with the fire department staging a lively annual dance and cheers as clocks marked the New Year. Prohibition-era changes added to the festive mood as the new year began with optimism.
Jorgen Jorgensen, born November 1866 in Jylland Denmark, died Christmas Day at his California home after illness. He had recently received treatment in Logan Utah and was joined by his wife and daughters Mrs. William Hyatt Edith and Harriet Jorgensen. He had lived in the Big Hole area for many years before moving to Los Angeles. Continued on page 4.
Snow broke a long dry spell in Beaverhead County last week with four to five inches in the valley and over a foot in the mountains. A high wind Friday night produced deep drifts and many roads became nearly impassable. Temperatures plunged near zero nightly across most regions.
City drivers must secure new permits this week as old licenses expire Monday. Treasurer Frank C. McFadden will issue permits at the city water office daily this week. The 50 cent fee remains. required details include signature, address, sex, age, height, weight, eye and hair color, and occupation. Unregistered ranchers and nonresidents are excluded.
Beaverhead county educators joined the Montana Education Association midwinter meeting in Billings last week. President Sheldon E. Davis of the Normal College chairs the Montana Society for the Study of Education and serves on the MEA executive council. Delegates include Principal W. W. Wahl Miss Nettie Hand and Miss Harel from the training school.
Utah Nevada Idaho and Southern Montana Ford dealers attended a Salt Lake City preview of the 1935 Ford V-8. Henry Ford announced the model by telephone as dealers heard we expect a half billion dollar 1936 program and see new beauty easier steering and improved braking.
Beaverhead county officers start new terms next week with routine changes. The sole new official is Frank C. McFadden as public administrator succeeding Rebecca Connelley. Bertie Mathews retires as county treasurer with Norah Connelley taking the post in March. existing officials and two legislators were re-elected.
Professor Melville Sayre of Montana School of Mines discusses prehistoric buffalo slaughters in central and western Montana. He cites the Madison Buffalo Cliff near Butte as a major site with thick bone deposits and evidence of cliff drives and post‑fall killing. Women smoked meat and tanned hides while warriors guarded survivors.
Montana State College’s Bulldogs face a strong Montana State Bobcats squad for two night games Friday and Saturday. Eddie Exum leads the Bobcats after recent wins, while Luke Dyche faces his brother Schubert in a brother against brother twist. New Bulldogs players may see action as winter quarter opens amid high crowd expectations.
Sam Wilkinson of State Bank & Trust spoke on Unused Credits and outlined 17 federal lending agencies with 49 loan types plus 30 private lenders. He noted banks as lending agents fell from 31 000 in 1921 to 16 000 in 1934 and estimated bank credit exceeds industry demand by 10 billion dollars in 1934. Professor Rush Jordan praised the late Goodwin T. Paul. Dr. Robert B Albright discussed unemployment banking conditions and recovery plans. Lambert Elfel chaired. the program included Christmas songs.
George Melton and B. J. Met Len, senator and representative from Beaverhead County, left early this week to spend the next eighty days elsewhere.
The Montana State Normal college begins its winter term with expected attendance near last year. Most fall quarter students registered before leaving Dec 20 for holiday homes, while new students were added as textbooks were issued and enrollment activity settled.
The St James choir offers a Messiah program at a Sunday service in St James Church at five o clock. The program features arias recitatives and the Pastoral Symphony on organ with a full chorus. Notable selections include Comfort Ye My People and Hallelujah with soloists Mrs Moe Dr Stephan Mrs Gilbert Mrs Willis and Mrs Gilbert among others.
Mrs. Olie E. Smith longtime Monida resident and wife of O J Smith died at her Monida home after a brief illness. Born April 24 1881 in Essex Iowa she moved to Montana in 1892 and lived in Benaverhead county 35 years. She ran the Monida hotel and later led the Monida Mercantile. she was active in Neighbors of Woodcraft. Survived by husband and a son Farmer Smith of New York.
The government cattle buying program in Beaverhead County concluded Saturday with a final 2 carload shipment from the Dillon yards. Four carloads were sent from Beaverhead points via Armstead, Dell and Dillon last week, and County Agent Bernard Williams said further allotments are unlikely. The sheep buying program for the year is also believed finished.
Sheriff McCollum said on December 21 he was alerted to locate John Paul Chase. DOJ agents in Butte wired confirmation that Chase, thought traveling south via Dillon, had been seen in Butte earlier that morning. Despite checks on highways and trains, no trace was found. New Year’s found the county jail empty with no prisoners for the third straight holiday.
