The Beaverhead County year 1929 closed with many events of interest. The compiled record lists day by day happenings from the past year ending at midnight, summarizing notable incidents and milestones.
Cupid smiles on Beaverhead County with 116 marriage licenses issued in 1929, up 25 from 1928. Many couples came from outside the county, including 58 from Dillon’s home area and 16 from Butte. October set a local record with 20 marriages, followed by June and November, each with multiple licenses. Divorces remained low with 19 decrees in the year. Names of couples and dates are listed in the clerk’s records.
Beaverhead county mining men met at Senator Pear I Smith’s offices to draft a constitution and by laws for the newly formed Bureau of Mining and Minerals. The bureau aims to organize information for greater development of Beaverhead county’s mineral resources.
A question over auto license rates split by half or one quarter year has been clarified by an attorney general opinion. The ruling says that only cars originally registered in this state in a prior year are excluded from the special rate provisions, with further details noted in the letter to the state registrar.
Jdmund Thompson city employee was injured last Thursday morning when a small delivery truck driven by Louis Stabettack ran over him on an unnamed street. The driver did not see the worker in time. injuries were not serious though Thompson could not work the next day. Officer Fred Oliver reported a slight injury incident accompanying the page.
The Dillon Country Club will hold its annual business meeting on January 18. Frank Bulger, secretary, announced that officers for the new year will be elected and a 1980 activities program will be outlined. All members are urged to attend.
Edward W. Decker of Minneapolis, head of Northwest Bancorporation and Northwestern National Bank, says Ninth Federal Reserve District had a very satisfactory year. Dairying, livestock, mining and manufacturing prospered. grain prices fell and one third of this year's crop remains owned by farmers. Mining also did well. 1930 is seen with confidence despite securities liquidation.
R. G. A. J. Greenwood aged 96 died at the home of her granddaughter Mrs Eva Bird last Wednesday afternoon after two months of ill health. She lived in Dillon 12 years, survived by a son Otis of Butte and grandsons Robert and Claude Greenwood of Los Angeles. Funeral was held Friday from the Bird home and interment at Mountain View cemetery conducted by C Shannon.
In Beaverhead County during the year ending yesterday there were 96 deaths with heart trouble as a major cause. The tally shows a higher death rate than last year though births exceeded deaths with 78 infants born. October proved healthiest with two deaths. January, May, July, August, September, and December each recorded six fatalities. The report lists many individuals by name and date, including deaths from self harm and gunshot wounds.
Paris and London radio stations broadcast carols and hymns to lonely islands in the Indian Ocean Pacific and Atlantic turning Christmas into a shared celebration. St Paul Island’s radio was wrecked by a gale and traders feared disappearance before the broadcast restored contact and hope.
Beaverhead county educators joined the Montana Education Association assembly in Helena during Christmas vacation. Delegates included Rush Jordan Genevieve Metlen and Herbert Wildman, with Charles Henry serving as necrology committee chair. Over 150 educators attended the annual meeting.
Beaverhead county records show 78 births in the year ending last night with 39 boys and 39 girls. The total exceeds last year’s 77 births. Monthly details include July with 11 births, and other months listing various boy girl counts.
Rav emberhead county schools will resume work next Monday Jan 6 after a two week break that began Dec 20. Dillon’s three schools reopen then as the Montana State Normal college starts its winter quarter with enrollment similar to fall term. Many students registered for the new term while graduates and others not returning after holidays are accounted for.
Illon held its first Christmas celebration in years on the Oregon Short Line depot lawn last Wednesday. More than 200 people gathered around a lit Christmas tree to hear Dillon’s best vocal talent sing four carols and join in familiar anthems led by Rev. Father F. X. Lechner. Snow briefly threatened the event during a blizzard at 6 pm but soon cleared. Santa Claus distributed small gifts to attending children after the carols.
