Montana State Normal Bulldogs won three straight home games led by a fast passing attack and strong guard play. They defeated Eastern Montana Normal 64 27 and then beat Billings Polytechnic 66 40 and 63 36. Breeden coached squad used many substitutes as depth kept pressure high throughout the games.
Women members of the Dillon Country Club elected officers for the ensuing year at a Friday night meeting in the Dillon Examiner office. Mrs. D A Galt was chosen chairman, and Mrs. H M Brundage, Mrs. Anson Baxter, and Miss Clara Adams were named to the women’s sports committee. A joint meeting with the men’s sports committee will outline season activities.
Four Dillon youths joined the state A A U boxing event at the K C gym in Butte. Francis Gibbons defeated Steve Krusel in a 127 pound bout, Jack O'Brien lost to Nick Malkovich at 147, Ray Cote stopped Chester Melton in 135, and Harry Ford beat Steve Spotzer by technical knockout. Gibbons reached the finals as Scotty Hutchinson trained the Dillon boxers.
William Flynn longtime Blacktail resident died last Wednesday night at Warm Springs after a long illness. His body was brought to Dillon and funeral service held Friday at St. Rose Catholic Church. Requiem High Mass by Rev. Father F. X. Lechner. Interment in Mountain View Cemetery. Survived by brother Thomas and nephews Pat and Hubert Flynn of Dillon.
Dillon Boy Scouts qualify for advancement at a court of honor last Friday at the courthouse. James Kelly earns Life Scout, Bill Bayerd Arthur McFarland George A Webster and Harold Wheat become Star Scouts, Winn Best and Warren Stone advance to First Class, Jack Selway to Second Class. merit badges awarded to Leonard Baird Roy Forrester Harlan Harrison Melbourne Jackson Tommy Luebben Charles Robert Lee Eugene Smith and George Webster. court of honor to be held soon. Dillon PTA plans March 23 entertainment at training school auditorium headlined by a home talent play directed by Violet Eastman.
Dr Thomas A Grigg of Butte Montana lost his bid to block removal to Idaho on an indictment charging conspiracy to deal narcotics. The 38 year physician challenged transfers claiming hardship and denial of speedy trial. Shipments allegedly targeted Idaho Falls and Blackfoot.
The Dillon public library is placed on a waiting list for International Mind Above books funded by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Four adult and four children's books will be sent quarterly, expanding travel and cultural coverage. Announcement will follow when Dillon’s first shipment arrives.
Mrs. C. T. Callahan entertained the St Rose guild last Thursday afternoon, hosting members for a social gathering with tea and conversation.
At the Dillon Rotary Club. Monday night talk at the Andrus hotel covered George Washington his life and homes. James Kurtz Beaverhead county high school spoke on Washington's life achievements highlighting soldier statesman businessman farmer and citizen roles. Betty Roe described Washington homes including Mount Vernon as his cherished residence. Irving Christensen read Tony's speech referencing the cherry tree myth.
On Friday Feb 19 the Birch Creek P T A met at the school with Mrs W E Roberts presiding. Pupils competed in the Washington Bicentennial Declamation contest with Alton Crossley winning group 1 and Letha Crossley taking the first in group 3 to represent the school at the district contest in Dillon on March 19.
The mining district tournament schedule shows Dillon's Beavers defending their zone title with games set from Thursday night through Saturday night. Key matches include Peter vs Butte, Deer Lodge vs Anaconda, Helena vs Missoula, and Dillon facing Central on Friday afternoon with subsequent elimination rounds and finals to follow.
State University in Missoula hosts the fourth annual tractor school February 29 and March 1 under the forestry program. Caterpillar factory instructors from Peoria join local tractor men to demonstrate tractors and equipment valued at 30000 dollars. The event, free of charge, is supported by the school of forestry and Westmont Tractor and Equipment, with two factory instructors and engineers on site.
Services for the late Frank Gauthier pioneer resident of Beaverhead county were held Friday afternoon at Grace Methodist Episcopal church. The Rev J A Meeke conducted the services and burial followed at Mountain View.
The State Land Board delays a planned meeting with school officials to discuss cutting state grazing land rentals about 60 percent. Secretary of State W E Harmon, a board member, cites several invitees in Washington for the National Education Association convention. The rentals fund the public school permanent fund.
Onro E Bucy, of West Yellowstone, guilty of complicity in burning hay stacks in Centennial valley in November 1929. Jury recommended four years in state prison. Judge Lyman Bennett to sentence Monday. Bucy allegedly paid Pat Young and Emil Borgeson $200 to commit the arson.
Charles Calvert arrived in town from his Dell area ranch last Saturday, staying for a brief visit and meeting local residents.
Beaverhead chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution prepares for the state meeting with plans including a motor trip to Bannack and other historic sites. The complete program will be announced soon. Mr and Mrs A Ward of Bannack are parents of a baby daughter born last Friday.
The Wranglers held a meeting last Thursday evening at the Beaverhead Abstract company offices to discuss ongoing business matters and upcoming tasks.
Alber ton queen Orothy Peppard headlines a Booster Club vaudeville at Normal college auditorium. Dillon queens Helen Bayers and Virginia Randolph, plus Helen Hays, serve as maids of honor. Proceeds fund Chinook yearbook. Dillon Elks Lodge No 1664 initiated 12 new members at Odd Fellows hall. 126 Elks attended. A city hall dance followed, with Baxter Tonrey Orchestra providing music.
Miss Martha Featherly entertained at the George R. Featherly ranch north of the city last Thursday evening.
Mr and Mrs Emerson Hughes and a baby spent the weekend with Dillon relatives from their ranch home on Horse Prairie.
A large crowd attended the Dillon volunteer fire department annual ball at city hall auditorium on Washington’s Birthday. Prizes went to Mrs. Elmo Wynn and Dale Tash in Spanish costumes, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schmittroth as George and Martha Washington, with L. B. Peterson and Harris Opp winning comic prizes. Bax ter Tonrey orchestra provided music.
