Dillon Delegation Meets HW Officials Over U S 91 Route Change

A Dillon delegation led by Mayor Phillip J Lovell met Helena officials including State Highway Engineer Scott P Hart to discuss routing changes for U S 91 through Dillon's business district. The group pressed for keeping signs and avoiding tourist loss, while the school board warned of hazards and noise from trucks, and the council offered paving cost-sharing options along the new route.

Beaverhead Boy Rancher James Barrett Named Outstanding Young Farmer

James G. Barrett, 30, a Horse Prairie rancher and partner with his brother Desmond on a 6000 acre Grant area ranch, is Beaverhead county s 1955 Outstanding Young Farmer, honored at the Agricultural Day luncheon. The award elevates him to Montana s state candidate for the national honor. the state winner will be announced at Bozeman Winter Fair in March.

Second Ag Day Program Draws Wide County Attendance

The Dillon Ag Day at Elks Hall drew representation from all county parts under the District Soil Conservation Supervisors. A 10:30 a.m. film Return to Eden from Allis-Chalmers via P. J. Lovell Co. opened events, followed by lunch with farm implement dealers and talks in the afternoon. The Outstanding Young Farmer award went to James G. Barrett of Grant. Emmett Blomquist was re elected to the District Supervisors board. Rex Campbell and Dr. O. Q. Thomas spoke, with Tom McNulty from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation administration explaining newer program phases.

Governor Aronson to Head Beaverhead Young Republicans Banquet

Governor J Hugo Aronson will be principal guest and speaker at the Beaverhead County Young Republicans banquet at the Diamond Bar Inn in Jackson. Honor guests include Mrs Aronson and family and Wesley Castles. Attendees from Dillon include Mr and Mrs Cliff Mockel, Mrs J H Gilbert, and O A Bergeson. The event begins with a 6 30 p m banquet and includes social activities planned in Jackson Wisdom and Don Anson home.

No Further Action Planned in Fatal Hunting Accident

Beaverhead county officials announced no further action in the death of John Bukvich who was killed by a hunter's bullet in Vipond Park Beaverhead county on November 19. County Attorney Carl M. Davis and District Court Judge Philip C. Duncan reviewed the coroner inquest transcript. The coroner's jury had ruled the shooting was by another hunter John M. Rogers of Butte amid poor visibility from snow and wind.

U S Court Rules Ermont Mines to Receive Damages

The U S Court of Claims ruled Ermont Mines Inc and four other gold mines entitled to just compensation for wartime shut downs by a War Production Board order on Oct 8, 1942. The decision, sent to commissioners to determine damages, cites Fifth Amendment takings. Principal owner is the R B Caswell Estate of Portland. original claimants traced to D W Erwin and partners.

Future U S 91 Highway to Reduce Tributary Roads

The Great Falls Tribune reports a new approach to U S 91 routing west of Dillon will cut, not add, roads joining the highway. Officials note the federal system now includes U S 87, U S 10, and U S 91, with interchanges and access points expected to shrink as traffic grows toward 1975.

Strangh Bulldogs Seal 105-62 Season Finale Victory

Western's champion Bulldogs crushed Northern Lights 105 to 62 to close the 1955-56 Montana Collegiate Conference season with a 9-1 record. Donnie Donovan led Western with 26 points while Ed Ellingson and Byron Knudsvig paced Northern with 16 each.

Briggs Martinell Nominated For Vigilante Directors

G H Briggs and Paul Martinell were nominated for directors of the Vigilante Electric Cooperative at a member-user meeting in District No 9 at Dell Community Hall. The district covers Lakeview Onida Dell and Lima. Briggs currently serves on the board. Election is set for the annual meeting on Saturday March 31. Five directors’ terms expire this year and a board reorganization will follow.

Kiwanis Stone Passed Between Montana Chapters

Dillon Kiwanis members attended Sheridan's weekly meeting at Bething Hall in Sheridan. The Dillon group received the International Stone from Canada, which is touring Montana Kiwanis chapters, having been presented to Sheridan the prior week by Butte Riwanian members and to be passed on by Dillon.
