After three years of testing the Veterans Administration will provide the suction socket artificial leg to eligible veterans with above knee amputations. In two years the VA tested over 500 amputee veterans in its experimental program, with successful results in the majority. The suction design lacks pelvic hinge and suspension harness and uses suction to hold the leg to the stump during walking.
The VA led an experimental program with manufacturers and medical authorities to test a suction socket leg that frees movement in all directions and removes the need for a rigid pelvic belt. More than 500 veterans were tested and many non veterans received fittings through the artificial limb industry. Short courses trained 300 orthopedic surgeons and limb fitters nationwide.
The VA will provide a free medical examination to any veteran when needed to determine entitlement to a VA benefit. The exam is not universal but is granted when necessary to assess eligibility.
