October brought deficient precipitation with mild rain and little snow in the mountains. November was unusually wet with rain or wet snow melting quickly. Ground saturated by year start, then froze deeply before heavy snows. December saw near normal snowfall, mountains above average by year end. Continuous cold weather prevailed thereafter.
Snow Depth Hits Several Feet in Mountain Ranges This Month
The month brought generally unfriendly packing conditions with drifting only in spots where winds blew snow into ravines and gulches. In the Jefferson Drainage Basin snow accumulations reached several feet at high elevations in the Big Hole Highland Boulder Ruby and Tobacco Root ranges. December snow fell well above average, with ground remaining wet and frozen beneath the snow.

Fireman killed in Melrose train accident
James T Heime, 26, a fireman on the Orevton Short Line, died when the engine parted from the tender near Melrose. Heime was crushed under wheels as the coupling failed, his body mangled. coroner and undertaker moved to the scene. Heime's funeral planned in Lima.
