They cite 13,000 cars and 20 to 25 percent livestock escaping taxation while some counties show 1920 values none the less. The state board warns against further real property reductions and pushes uniform valuation amid declining totals since 1918.
The article outlines a phased 20 percent deduction in early years for low level property taxation, with 15 percent in a later year and 10 percent in the fifth year, after which the assessor sets valuations. It notes a proposal to collect automobile licenses with property tax, requiring payment before license issuance unless a lien exists on real property, per the state board of equalization’s stance as explained by Commissioner Bergeman.
The discussion centers on grazing land valuations set at $4.86 per acre and a $1.08 taxable valuation, equating to five cents per acre in tax. Officials argue exemptions should not be granted for nonuse, while W L Stockton of the Montana Farm Bureau says farmers seek equitable taxes and lower public expenditures.
