The Beaverhead National Forest fed 31 260 cattle and 164 701 sheep on 1 204 152 usable grazing acres with 753 916 acres unused. Losses totaled 17 cattle and 797 sheep to poisonous plants 2 037 sheep and 2 cattle to predators 43 cattle and 10 sheep to disease 64 cattle 19 horses and 1 563 sheep to other causes. Gopher damage dominated losses with 414 000 acres infested and 171 000 treated with poison bait. Range work included 237 miles of fence and 214 water developments. Ten home livestock associations operated on forest lands.

Beaverhead Bulls Draw High Praise at Conference
Bernard Williams Beaverhead county agent told Montana Ex tension service workers the county could supply bulls suitable for a motion picture role after reading a release seeking a bull with rough exterior and gentle soul for a film star Martha Ge. He said Beaverhead has many bulls including some with Mexican arena lineage and noted the climate has mellowed their temperament.

High School Student Speaks On Rural Problem At Dillon Rotary
Floyd Pahnish of Beaverhead county high school addressed Dillon Rotary Club on The Rural Problem from the Sociological Viewpoint. He argued rural decline is sharp where urban growth is fastest and rural quality drops as city lure increases. The club endorsed a Dillon Business and Professional Women's Club project for Mountain View cemetery irrigation water and piping upgrades. Serving as chair, Harold Warner announced next week's meeting will be chaired by Joe Wedum. The program will include a Scout talk by Rev. Willis J. Loar and a musical by Miss Mary Castles from the high school faculty.

County Treasurer Berti Mathews announced about 1200 motor vehicles including cars and trucks were registered by the deadline in Beaverhead County. Officials estimate this total is roughly half of the cars needing plates based on recent years’ records.

Beaverhead Rancher Lewis M. Gilman Dies After Illness
Lewis M. Gilman a Beaverhead rancher died at his Dillon home last Wednesday after a brief illness from pneumonia. Born in Leavenworth Kansas 55 years ago he moved to Dillon in 1912 and ran a dairy in recent years. Survived by four daughters Martha Eva Mary and Mrs Carl Anderson all of Dillon and four daughters. Funeral services were held Monday at Brundage chapel with Rev A H McDonald officiating and interment in Mountain View cemetery.

Dillon Gun Club Holds Annual Meet
Joe Lynch was re elected president of the Dillon Gun club at the annual meeting. Leslie Smith was re elected vice president and B W Emerick kept secretarial duties with Vic Westergard named field captain. A February registered shoot is planned with a Ted Renfro medal as prize. The Lima club also attended and elected officers. The project for Mountain View cemetery progress is noted with an extra water share and a reservoir, totaling about 2000 dollars and two more years to complete funded by the city donating pipe.

Dillon to Host Ice Carnival If Weather Permits
Current plans call for Dillon to stage its first ice carnival next Sunday at the municipal rink near Barrett hospital if conditions allow. The Bannack post office, among Montana’s oldest, was closed last Wednesday by order of the federal post office department. A closing date of Feb 15 is set, but no operations have occurred. Residents protest vigorously and have signed a petition requesting reinstatement.

Negro Porter's Guilty Plea Leads to 10 Year Prison Sentence
Guy Abernathy, a negro porter, was sentenced to ten years in state prison after pleading guilty in district court before Judge Henry G Rodgers to a first degree assault charge. He was moved to Deer Lodge by Sheriff Paul H Temple following the sentencing. Abernathy allegedly shot at neighbor Paul Buchali in the Cabbage Patch district the night of November 27 after Buchali aided a woman Abernathy was disturbing.
