Mrs J D Berry Dies After Ill Health in Dillon

The obituary notes Mrs. James D. Berry died Wednesday after a period of illness. She was born December 28 1876 in Wyandotte Kansas and married James D Berry twenty one years ago. The family moved to Montana and she lived in the state 19 years and in the county 16. She leaves her husband and five children two daughters and three sons. The body was brought to Dillon from Butte and funeral services were held at the Methodist church with burial at Mountain View cemetery.

Beaverhead Alberta Oil and Gas elect officers at annual meeting

Beaverhead Alberta Oil and Gas Co officers and directors were elected at the Rialto building office in Butte. President Nels Nelson and Vice President H J Grimes head a roster that includes Secretary-Treasurer Dr T A Grigg and directors C M Allen A M Walker B N Stevenson, with J H McCready reappointed field musinger. The board also announced acquisition of 80 acres in Soap Creek oil field and plans to develop the Beaverhead county well amid cold weather drilling. The Beaverhead well stands over 1800 feet with first sands possibly producing soon.

Mr. and Mrs. John Tessier arrived last week from Seattle Washington and other coast points. They visited their children in Seattle where their two youngest sons attend school.

J H Stevens has disposed of his meat market to Hansen Packing Company of Butte. J Wolfer of Anaconda is sent to manage the store. Mr and Mrs Stevens have moved to Butte where Stevens has taken a job with the Sanitary Meat Market.

American Legion to Stage Show and Dance Next Month

Beaver head Post of the American Legion votes to stage a minstrel and vaudeville show the latter part of next month and plans a Washington birthday masquerade ball at the city hall auditorium. A letter campaign will seek to raise membership to 500, with achievements highlighted including a free employment agency serving over four hundred men and a claims department aiding ex service members. The group also plans an elite rooms sign board and ends with a smoker and social.

Dillon Quintets Battle to Narrow Loss at Phillipsburg

Dillon and Phillipsburg traded leads in a fast, clean game with Phillipsburg edging Dillon 34-32 after a late rally. Andy Smith Leimert and Foster led Dillon scoring, while Page and Frankling paced Phillipsburg with six baskets each.

Annual Auction Sale of Horses in Dillon

The Dillon Horse Sales company holds its annual February auction on Saturday February 26. Manager George Ditty reports strong demand for good work horses with 500 head expected. Buyers from across the country have shown interest and ranchers are urged to present fat, trained horses ready for harness. The sale starts at ten o clock and offers feed and yardage at reasonable rates.

Normal College and Wesleyan duel ends 20 to 10

The Montana State Normal College basketball team defeated Montana Wesleyan 20 to 10 in a heated gym clash last Saturday. Normal guards Ryburn and Telin disrupted plays under the basket while Drummey and Ryburn stood out for the winners. Holmes Hill opened scoring for Normal, and the lead swung early and late as both sides fought for control.

National Oil Disposes Holdings to Dillon Oil

A stockholders meeting elected Dr. A. C. Sandberg as president J. H. Mackey as vice president Alex Walker as secretary and T. E. Leubben as treasurer with John Wolf on the board of directors. The firm voted to transfer holdings to the Chicago Dillon Oil Share company giving each stockholder an equal share in the new entity. The National Oil company owns land in Big Sheep Creek basin rich in high grade oil shale while Chicago Dillon Oil Shale company operates a retort in Smallhorn canyon. Alex Walker and A. W. Two Plays At Normal College Friday Night

The Junior Class at the Normal College presents two plays in the college auditorium Friday at 8 45 pm. The Burglars features five young women who encounter a man in their host house around 10 pm and fear the worst. When Greek Meets Greek is a light skit with a moral about flirting written by Jerome K Jerome.

Man Wanted for Forgery Arrested in Portland

Sheriff Mooney pursued extradition after Alfred Emeley, listed with a Beaverhead county reward, was arrested in Portland last Wednesday evening on forgery charges. Emeley allegedly forged E J Clark’s signature on several bad checks totaling about 200 dollars. Associate G B Norris also faces forgery accusations and may soon be taken by Portland police.

A group from Dillon will travel to southern California this week to enjoy sunny weather. Some departed on the California Special last night with others leaving through the week. Damage suit filed for 12400 in district court

A damage suit for 12400 was filed in district court last week with John Taylor as plaintiff and Dr H A MacMillan as defendant. Clarence Hanley and Charles E O'Neill of Butte are listed as attorneys for the plaintiff.

Recital by L A Gregorys String Orchestra Delights Crowd

Monday night in Los Angeles Gregorys String Orchestra performed eight numbers and two solos at the training school auditorium. Cadmen's Evening Frolic arranged from a piano solo by Mr. Gregory closed the concert with notable reception. Jay Cosgrove played Fancy Free on cornet and William Dunn Jr. offered Herd Girls Dream on flute to audience delight. Gregorys quartet Paul Judge Frances Dunn Orpha Baker Muriel Paddock, all high schoolers, entered their piece in a state contest to be held in Big Timber in March. Students will give a recital February 13.

Death of Ogden sports store founder Harry Browning

Harry Browning of Dillon and Ogden died after several months illness in Ogden Utah with family at his side. He was 35, a World War II veteran and cor pal in the 167th infantry. Survived by two brothers, two sisters and his father, all in Ogden. Browning brothers own Browning Brothers Sports store and were longtime local personalities. His death drew deep sorrow and sympathy from Dillon and Ogden friends.

Two Stiff Battles Ahead for Beaverhead Team

Beaverhead basketball faces two tough trips next Friday and Saturday as it meets Anaconda in Anaconda and Missoula on the road. Anaconda’s large Smelter City floor challenges Dillon though a prior win suggests possible repeat. In Missoula, Dillon faces a fast veteran five and is hoped to struggle harder to regain a recent home loss.

Reward Offered for Arrest of Chester Casey

The Colorado state penitentiary reports Chester Casey, a former Dillon resident, escaped from Canyon City custody on the twenty second by slipping from his cell and using electric wires to land outside. A $50 reward is posted by Colorado officials. Casey previously escaped Dillon jail on August 19, aided by friends and by passing favors to bypass guards. He had a checkered record including burglaries and a 1919 sentence of three to five years. The story continues on page four.
