Beav erhead County Records Mark 89 Deaths in 1948

Beaverhead county reports 89 deaths in 1948 up 24 from 1947. February led with 20 fatalities, July followed with 10. March had nine deaths and June eight. There were six accidental deaths and one suicide. List of the deceased includes Emma L Carhart 86 and Oscar D Miller 69 among others in January and February.

Mrs Mary Cox dies after brief illness in Beaverhead

Mrs Mary Anne Cox longtime Beaverhead resident died Saturday at Barrett hospital after a nine day illness aggravated by arthritis and cold. Born in Thuro England, she came to Montana at 18 joining her brother in Butte and later married Alfred Cox. The couple homesteaded in the Big Hole basin before cattle work then retirement to Dilton. Survived by daughter-in-law Mary Fidler, granddaughter Alta May Fidler of Warren Ohio, son Alfred C Fidler of Dilton a great grandson Paul Fidler, a niece and several others. Funeral was held Tuesday at Brun chapel with Rev Robert N Treene officiating and burial in Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers named J C Fuller Pete Hiden George King John Wenger.

Students Describe College Life at Dillon Rotary Meeting

Phillip Bond chaired a Dillon Rotary gathering featuring visiting students home for the holidays. Speakers from Wheatons College, Montana State Bozeman, Princeton, Northwestern, and University of Montana shared sketches of courses, history, athletics, and campus life. Beavers Beat Anaconda In Tight Thursday Clash

Dillon Beavers edged Anaconda 37 to 33 after a fourth quarter struggle. Johnson led Dillon with 14 points while E Davis added 10, as Butte Central’s Devich scored 18 and Doran 11 for the visitors. A junior high frosh grade school matchup preceded the varsity game, drawing strong crowd interest and raising about 90 dollars for Beaver Lodge.

Burglary Charged Against Gallahan

Arthur Gallahan was arrested Sunday night by Chief Dan Mooney and Patrolman Stone. He was arraigned Monday in justice court with bonds set at 1000 by Judge Louis Stahl. Charged with burglary in the Lovelace Motor Supply show window break and theft of an electric drill, he is said to have damaged a Kirby hotel door window on Center street.

Beaverhead County Births Hit High Rate in 1947

County records show 112 births in Beaverhead in 1947, near the all time high, with 56 boys and 56 girls and two sets of twins. Most births occurred at Barrett hospital, with several families welcoming daughters and sons in July through September and March.

Driving Permits Available at Treasurer Office

Mrs. Alice H. Orr, county treasurer, announces 1949 driving permits are available at the treasurer’s office. Applicants must present the renewal stub from the 1948 license. the Montana Highway Patrol will issue a validated license for next year.

Larceny Charged in Noon Station Theft

Martin Barrett is jailed on a grand larceny charge after allegedly robbing the Davis service station noon hour Monday. Sheriff Tem ple states Barrett grabbed about $56 from the register while attendant John Magee stepped out to service a car and Barrett attempted to flee. Barrett was arraigned in justice court before Judge Louis Stahl that afternoon with bonds set at 3000 dollars, which he did not furnish.

Death Claims Beloved Dell Ranch Woman

Beav erhead county mourns Mrs Martinell a longtime Dell resident and former Eastern Star matron who died Friday at Barrett hospital after a short illness. Born 1867 in Piper City Illinois she married Elmer M Martinell in 1893 and he died in 1934. Survived by five of eight children thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren the Dell funeral was held at Brundage home and burial followed at Mountain View cemetery beside her husband.
