Normal College Grants Ten Diplomas At Commencement

Ten diplomas and one bachelor of education degree were conferred at the autumn quarter commencement of Montana State Normal College. Principal speaker Conrad Orr urged inspiration as Arnold Clair directed a musical program. Diplomas went to Helen C. Dean and others from Belgrade and surrounding areas.

Beaverhead Faces Glad Yule Tide

Beaverhead county reports heightened shopping and mailing as residents prepare for Christmas. Dillon post office sees rising mail, local firms report strong holiday business. Dillon schools end Thursday and Friday and reopen Monday January 4. Christmas programs fill the week with student performances and piano solos planned at the training school.

Miss Helen Gelhaus Dies at 87 in Butte Hospital

Miss Helen Louise Gelhaus longtime Beaverhead County resident died Friday in a Butte hospital from pneumonia after major surgery. Born February 16 1898 in Glendale she lived in Dillon since 1906 with her father John J Gelhaus and sisters Dorothy Adelade and brother Albert. Funeral Monday at St Rose Church with Requiem High Mass by Rev F X Lechner and burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

Normal College Women’s Group Initiates 31 Members

Thirty-one new members were initiated into the Women’s Athletic Association on December 10. The event featured stunt entertainment and a Christmas tree with refreshments under president Elen Shepcevich. Pledges include Jean Glover Plentywood Alwilda Grigg Troy Audrey Dahl Big Timber and others from multiple towns. The autumn quarter ends December 17 with a holiday break until January 4, and Jan 2 offers new student registration options.

Girl Scouts Awarded Honors In Dillon Court Of Awards

Nearly 50 Dillon Girl Scouts received awards and advancement at the court of awards held last Thursday night in the courthouse court room. Dorothy Ann Davis received the Golden Eaglet, the highest Girl Scout award, the first ever given to a Dillon Girl Scout. Tenderfoot badges were awarded by Mrs. C. T. Callahan to Bethel Minger, Evelyn Davis, Phyllis Davis, Dorothy Schwartz.

Beavers Host Twin Bridges For District Title Defense

Beaverhead county high school's lite Class B champions open title defense next Friday on their home floor meeting Twin Bridges high school. The Cardinals are expected to provide opposition as Dillon aims to retain the district crown then defend regional and state titles. A separate note reports church leaders from Baptist Methodist St James and Presbyterian churches planning a united leadership training school under the International Council of Religious Education.

Farm debt situation shows improvement in Montana

A Spokane Farm Credit Administration report notes lower mortgage indebtedness and lighter carrying charges in Montana, with fewer foreclosures and rising valuations. About 17 million dollars from the Land Bank aided farmers but 90 percent refinanced existing debts, cutting total debt by over 6 million and saving more than 872 thousand annually through lower interest rates.

Ranchers of Beaverhead County Receive Crop Phase Checks

Beaverhead County ranchers who fulfilled the crops phase of the Agricultural Conservation program received about $5,000 from 36 checks last Saturday. 86 applications were filed, 73 referred to the federal agency, and recipients must sign receipts at the county agent’s office. Williams and colleagues attended an extension service meeting in Missoula, with plans to renew and expand discussion groups for annual agricultural problem sharing for government planning.

Home Folks Welcomes New Undersheriff and Wife

In Wisdom on Sunday the Ted Harper post and American Legion Auxiliary held a farewell for John Troupe and Victoria Troupe at the Legion building. Thirty three members attended a banquet and gifts included a metal buffet set, with Mr. Troupe thanking the group. The couple will move to Dillon on December 26 as Mr. Troupe becomes under sheriff.

Beaverhead High FFA Hosts Father and Son Dinner

Beaverhead county high school Future Farmers hosted their fathers and county ranchers at the annual father and son dinner in the school music room Saturday night. About 75 attended with Arthur Christensen presiding and Pearl Smith replying. Floyd Pahnish spoke on the Kansas City FFA meet and Blake Bean on the FFA outlook. County Agent Bernard Williams discussed local agriculture and Dwight L. Johnson spoke on the Smith Hughes department.

Twinkling Lights Herald Approach Christmas Season

Dillon glows with bright lights welcoming Christmas. Garlands of colored bulbs decorate business district light pillars. The community tree was erected on the Oregon Short Line by forestry men and Birch Creek CCC workers and lit with hundreds of multicolored lights. Local firms add to the festive display reflecting Beaverhead’s happy season.

City Six-Team Hoop League To Open Schedule

Dil lon's newly organized independent league will start play January 7 at the Normal college gym with weekly Thursday games. Four teams are local business firms, plus Birch Creek CCC and Normal college Bullpups, vying for a trophy. Rosters include Gosman Drug, Eliels, Coast-to-Coast, and Westwood squads with captains Gibbons, Vandegrift, Miller, and Rouse.

Bill Gleed Wins Flyer State Title

William Gleed of Lima won the state flyer championship at Sheridan with a 2 of 25 birds score, keeping state honors in the Dillon Gun club. Nick Birrer of Sheridan won the miss-and-out event and a special 10 third event. Dillon members in attendance included Pete Westergard and others from Dillon and Lima.

Moose Lodge Christmas Party Held Last Night

The Dillon Moose lodge hosted its Christmas party at the J. O. O. F. hall with members and guests. An entertainment program featured a band, readings, dances, and a "Kitten Strut" dance, followed by dancing and refreshments as favors were distributed.

Harry Hunter of Butte Dies of Heart Attack

Harry Hunter a renowned piano tuner from Butte died in a Livingston hotel from a heart attack. He was about 65, came to Butte from New York in 1898 and operated there while touring Montana. He had many Dillon friends and visited the region several times yearly. Berlin Gordon arrived yesterday from Darby where he worked for the Bureau of Public Roads.
