Beal County High School contract bid awarded to Cahill Mooney

As the Examiner went to press the general construction contract for the new Beaverhead county high school was let to Cahill-Mooney of Butte for 220 994. Bids on five contracts were opened by the high school board including demolition and general construction plumbing and heating electrical work sound clock and bell system and equipment.

Beaverhead shooters lead in 1938 Pacific International Trapshooting figures led by Ted Renfro who topped doubles and Montana singles honors. Renfro broke 1,852 of 1,900 singles, 495 of 530 doubles, and 816 of 900 handicap while winning doubles, handicap and high over all titles at the state shoot. Herman Peterson and Roy Forrester followed. the report lists Beaverhead averages for singles and handicap with other members and past results.

Quartet Held on Bad Check Count in Dillon Case

Four men are jailed in Beaverhead County on forgery charges tied to cashing a bad check in Armstead and attempting another at a Dillon business. Nick Thomas and Perry D. Bromley pleaded guilty and are bound over to district court under $1,000 bonds. Glen Ellsworth pleaded not guilty with $1,000 bond. Richard LaCroix was arrested by Silver Bow authorities and returned to Dillon. Steve Trbovich, Anaconda.

Bulldogs Schedule Set for Fifteen Conference Games

Montana Normal's Bulldogs will play fifteen conference games this season per Coach Ray Gallant with seven at home. Non-conference games are expected to fill open dates, mostly on the home floor, featuring matchups with Mines, Northern Montana, Carroll, Eastern Montana, and Billings Poly across January and February in Dillon, Helena, Butte, Havre, and Billings.

Dillon PTA Holds Annual Christmas Party

The Dillon Parent Teachers Association held its annual Christmas party at Bagley school with a large turnout of parents and educators. Pupils in Ruth Grotheer's room performed a play, Jean Bishop reviewed an article from the PTA magazine, and the high school glee club sang carols under Mary Castles. The event was planned by Mrs Frank Tyro after a brief meeting led by president Mrs L M Holloran.

Tuberculin Tests at Beaverhead High School

Beaverhead county high school students receive tuberculin tests this week conducted by local physicians with county nurse Miss Margaret Holloran. Tests run earlier than usual to finish before students move to new quarters, funded by the Christmas seal sale. Parents urged to have their children tested as tuberculosis toll peaks between ages 15 and 25.

State Prison Speakers At Dillon Rotary Dinner

Two Montana state prison officials William Coey and Ben Kuhl spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner. Warden Theodore Bergstrom could not attend. Coey presented statistics on the ages of the 547 prisoners currently in the prison at Deer Lodge.

Renfro Captures Montana State Flyer Title Again

Beaverhead gunner Ted Renfro won the state flyer championship at Sheridan last Sunday with 24 of 25 birds, becoming the first three time Montana flyer champion. Herman Peterson finished runner up with 22 of 25, while Pete Westergard tied for third with 21 of 25 alongside Nick Birrer of Sheridan. Tige Talent of Dillon ran the second string with 15 birds.

Hay Fire Burns Cornell Ranch Near Dillon

Flames consumed a hay stack on the Cornell ranch about a half mile south of Dillon last Thursday afternoon. Ranch employees fought the blaze with shovels and wet sacks to prevent spread while a close watch remained on the smoldering stack into the next day. The dry day fed a spectacular blaze at its height.

Dillon cagers defeat Butte High 31 to 19 in a pre Christmas showdown. Miles City Cowboys visit Saturday for a top class B clash in the Normal gym as Dillon seeks another strong regional performance. The Elks charity ball tops the weekend calendar with the city hall auditorium hosting a popular annual fundraiser. Proceeds aid charitable purposes with tickets sold through groceries and local businesses.

Gilmore & Pittsburg Railroad to discontinue sections

President W N Bichler announced effective May 1 1939 the Gilmore and Pittsburg Railroad will discontinue service between Armstead Montana and Salmon Idaho and between Leadore and Gilmore Idaho due to funds to continue operation. A formal abandonment application will follow.

Girls Group Grows to Seventy Members With Initiates

Thirty girls joined the W A A Monday evening December 12 bringing total membership to seventy. Beaverhead county reports first-half 1938 tax receipts total $183,714.10, up $4,000 from the prior year. Delinquents total $13,077.32 after a moratorium ending November 30, with $120,731.85 due by May 31, 1939. The county seeks tax deeds on many delinquent properties, with notices to owners and publication in the Examiner.

Members of the Dillon Business and Professional Women's club plan their annual Christmas party at Roselle's in Armstead next Monday at 7 PM.
