Dillon Prepares Festive Holiday Streets and Federal Building Cornerstone

Dillon coats itself in Christmas color as Rotary plans a semi permanent street decor scheme with a high tree on the Oregon Short Line lawn and lights funded by Beaverhead National forest officials and Union Electric. The cornerstone of the new federal building was laid with Masons in charge as Dr Sheldon E Davis and Postmaster Harry J Andrus spoke on Build for Dillon and Beaverhead Today Faith for Tomorrow and postal service growth. Stores offices and schools closed for the dedication.

College construction to start near future at Montana State Normal

Perrin and Sons of Greatalls won the bid for residence halls reconstruction at 129,662 dollars the lowest among general bids. Northern Plumbing and Heating of Helena received 26,986 dollars for plumbing and heating while Palmquist of Helena won the electrical contract at 8,489 dollars. The project total stands at 164,137 dollars from bids and 181,800 dollars in federal loan and grant funds. The women's dormitory will be completely reconstructed with work expected to begin soon.

Tom McCarthy Dies After Heart Attack in Local Establishment

Tom McCarthy a well known ranch laborer from the Beaverhead county area collapsed and died last night in a back room of a local soft drink shop. Death was attributed to a heart attack after a period of poor health. He had worked as a herder on several ranches and with the Gilbert Livestock Company and recently resided at the county farm.

Rotary Club to Erect Annual Lighted Community Tree

The Dillon Rotary club with forest service and Union Electric will set up its traditional lighted tree on the Oregon Short Line depot lawn. Dr. R. E. Albright spoke on U.S. politics and international relations, while Miss Irene Bond performed violin pieces with Ralph McFadden. Prof. Rush Jordan chaired the meeting.

Defendants Favored In Court Suit Outcome

A jury returned a verdict in favor of Henry Fitter in the Ralph Sarachilli vs. Henry Fitter civil case in district court. The plaintiff sought 10000 dollars for injuries from a car collision on the highway south of Dillon earlier this year. Judge Lyman H. Bennett presided. the Hogan against Horgan & Hickman and Ivan E. Spedden case was continued after the defendant failed to appear.

Funeral Rites Held For A A Curnutt Dillon Pioneer

A A Curnutt prominent Dillon man died at his North Pacific street home last Thursday afternoon after a lingering illness. Born November 21 1878 in Henry County Missouri he worked in farming milling and a Missouri flour mill before moving to Dillon in 1915. He later drove a dray and truck and retired last summer due to ill health. An active Baptist church trustee and longtime Dillon volunteer fireman and relief association trustee he left a strong community legacy.

Interest On City Bonds Takes Drop

Through the efforts of Mayor D A Galt and the city council, Dillon Montana bonds saw the rate cut from 5 6 to 4 percent. The move followed a bond call that prompted voluntary reductions by present holders. The change will save the city about 3 000 on the current issue and bolster Dillon as the lowest taxed Montana municipality. County taxes show more delinquent payments in November. Treasurer Norah Connelley cites a probable record, while total collections for the month exceed last year per Clerk Albert S Baker.

Girl Scout Court of Awards Held Thursday Evening

Badges of various kinds were awarded to about 36 girls and leaders at a Girl Scout court of awards held last Thursday evening at the Methodist church parlors. Leaders and high school girls were invested by Mrs. Clifton McLaughlin. awards to members of their troops were given by Mrs. K. D. Flock and Mrs. Norman Henry. Mrs. A. F. Waldorf, local council chairman, thanked mothers and leaders for their work. Refreshments were served by mother representatives and Scout good night songs closed the evening.

Louis and Walter Schmittroth of Dillon and Vincent Schmittroth of Salmon were called to Salt Lake City this week by the illness and death of their father Nicholas Schmittroth.

Shawn Dancers Entrance Wows Dillon Audience

A large crowd at Normal college auditorium witnessed Ted Shawn and his ensemble of men dancers deliver an artistic performance praised for its world class art. The show, presented under the Women's Athletic Association with faculty supervisor Miss Marjorie Hamer, drew spontaneous applause and sustained audience enthusiasm.

Deer Harvest in Wise River Area Near Dillon

Hunters in the Beaverhead National Forest Wise River district reported 27 deer and four elk taken this year. About 240 hunters accounted for the kills with strong big game sightings in the area. Check stations at Wise River Jerry Creek and Quartz Hill provided estimates and figures for the season.

Popular Choral Club To Resume After Holidays

The Dillon Choral Club will resume activities the first Tuesday in January with Mrs W G Gilbert returning as director. Officers for the year include Mrs J D Lee as business manager, Mrs Florence Wahl secretary treasurer, Mrs J T Newnes librarian, and an executive board led by Mrs T W Sargent. All women in the community interested in music are invited to join.

Beaverhead High Seeks Strong Basketball Season Strong

Nearly 40 candidates vie for Beaverhead county high school basketball spots as Coach Carl A. Ross holds daily elimination workouts to form the A and B squads. Four lettermen return Vincent Gibbons center Francis Gibbons guard Don Wheat and Bob Lee ward. Season opens December 20 at Twin Bridges.
