A Montana horse tale centers on a top pacer from Beaverhead now earning national attention. The horse has won about $9 000 since rising to big time status and a $7 500 offer remains refused by his owner Ed Buck who moved from Idaho Falls to Dillon in 1949 to run trucking and dryland farming.
Washington notes a strike by East and Gulf Coast longshoremen tests the Taft Hartley Act. President Eisenhower uses court injunctions to halt strikes threatening health and safety, arguing against union bosses who seek to weaken the law. Continued on Page 8.
William R. Tait of Great Falls National Bank accepted the vice president and director post at First National Bank of Dillon to begin January. A Dillon native, he is the son of Mrs. Gladys P. Tait and the late Alexander Tait. He graduated from Montana State University in business admin and has been with Great Falls bank since 1951.
State JC contest finals set for Friday morning at Western Montana College of Education with four judges named. Dr. Herbert Steele heads the panel along with Owen Grinde Clifford Laity and Ted McFadden. The winner earns a Voice of Democracy trophy and a $500 national scholarship. national winners receive travel and a banquet honors.
Dillon retail stores will stay open until nine oclock to accommodate Christmas shoppers on three Saturdays and one Monday in December. The November 8 meeting of the Chamber of Commerce committee set 9 p.m. closing times for the dates of 8, 15, 17 and 22. Benders stores will not be included and will observe regular hours.
Regular terms of the district court of the Fifth Judicial District for 1957 fixed by Judge Philip C. Duncan begin on different dates per county. Beaverhead on Mondays Jan 7 Apr 1 July 1 Oct 7. Jefferson on Wednesdays Jan 9 Apr 10 July 10 Oct 9. Madison on Fridays Jan 4 Apr 5 July 5 Oct 4.
Carla Andrus, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Andrus, a high school senior, won the Dillon Jaycees Voice of Democracy contest held at the school Monday. ten contestants competed with Boone Sparrow placing second and Steve Andrews third. State contest is at Western College next Friday under Dr J R Cumming. winner receives trophy and advances to Washington for national contest. Contestants honored include Ruth Clemon Ann Greene Dorothy Prohosky Clara Jensen and Gayle Wheat. Judges were Mrs Richard Warren Rush Jordan and Bruce Watters.
A new local column titled Weekly Themes by Dillon churchmen debuts in the Examiner. Each week a Dillon clergy member writes briefly on a chosen topic. Today’s Theme is by Rev. John L. Spencer pastor of the Lutheran church on Christmas and Christ.
George Diehl of East Helena was reelected to his fourth consecutive term as president of the Montana Farm Bureau Federation at the 37th annual convention in Great Falls. Officers named include Howard Lord vice president and Milt Simpson, Max Mayberry, Carl Smith as directors, with several holdover board members. The Women’s Committee chair Mrs. Paul Reese was reelected. other members include Mrs. Craddock, Mrs. Helfert, Mrs. Lammers, Mrs. Orcutt, Mrs. Crane, and Mrs. Smith. Delegates approved resolutions urging tax treatment toward cooperatives and labor unions, equalizing farm and nonfarm tax burdens, opposing livestock price supports and imports, and allowing farmers to grow wheat for feed without penalty.
Two large protest payments target the State Board of Equalization. Minerals Engineering Company paid 106 648.97 on net proceeds of mines. Montana Power Company paid 6 481.08 of its first half, totaling 17 471.13, protesting intercounty line assessments as excessive and discriminatory. Minerals sued to recover about 36 000. the case is pending in the Montana Supreme Court.
The Beaverhead Wool Pool will hold its annual meeting on Thursday January 10 1947. The Dillon based board of directors met at the county extension office to plan an educational and entertaining program and to invite all livestock owners to join or seek information from the extension office or directors. The board includes George McDonald Art Christensen Harry Andrus J E Selway and Parker Scott.
Dillon Jaycees sponsor annual Christmas lighting contest from December 1 to December 26. Local winners receive prizes with the first place entry advancing to a nationwide $5,000 contest. Last year's winners were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Davis.
Butte girl Dannette O Connell, last year earning a spot in Holiday on Ice, is slated to perform in a special Sonja Henie ice revue in New York City on Christmas night. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Dan J O Connell of Butte.
Weather records show a rapid temperature drop of up to 30 degrees in one hour as a north air mass blanketed the state. Thermometers logged a 61 degree fall from yesterday's high of 50, with some county readings likely below 20 below zero. Light dry snow began in the evening, a ground cover of three to four inches reported this morning.
