Thrilling Dillon Meet Draws Rave Reviews Despite Low Attendance

Three days of exciting harness racing in Dillon drew praise from spectators across three states. Managers Harry Andrus and George Ditty earned commendations for smooth operations while the co ownership booth, run by A. B. Cohen of Butte and Ray Hitchcock, attracted steady patronage.

Dell Matron Mrs McClain Dies After Illness at Barrett

Mrs George H McClain matron of the Dell section died at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. Funeral held at the Methodist church with Rev Howard B Ricketts officiating and interment in Mountain View Cemetery. She was about 65 years old, longtime Beaverhead county resident, survived by husband a daughter and several siblings. Big Hole Basin residents attended races here last week.

Rotary club executives meet in Deer Lodge

Governor Hazelbaker presided at a Montana Rotary club executives meeting in Deer Lodge last weekend. Dillon Rotary members J H Gilbert and T E Gilbert reported a successful gathering with plans for the next state convention set for Miles City in April 1928.

Ball and Garfinkle Draw In Twelve Round Welterweight Classic

Howard Ball of Pocatello and Imey Garfinkle of Salt Lake City fought twelve fast rounds to a draw on the American Legion card at the city hall auditorium Dillon crowds. The bout thrilled fans as both gave measured, clean fighting with sportsmanship, their fifth meeting ending in a hard fought stalemate.

Hunting Season Opens For Ducks In Beaverhead County

Beavershead County sportsmen scan skies and lakes for signs of duck and goose abundance as season runs from September 16 to December 1. Reports warn of migratory bird shortages, but locals hope conditions improve and that ducks and geese remain plentiful this year under state rules.

Stephenson to Fly New Waco Plane for Derby and Fair

A. W. Stephenson of Montana Airways and Emerson Hughes depart for Helena then Troy to fetch a new Waco aircraft for Stephenson to pilot in next month's New York Spokane air derby. The plane, same type as Dillon’s second Waco, will be used in exhibition flights at the state fair and prepared for the derby after returning to Dillon.

Fall term opens as Dillon schools plan larger enrollments

Beaverhead county high school and Dillon training school begin the regular fall term on Tuesday September 6 with about 1200 students expected across the city schools. A. T. Peterson notes a likely freshman class record and Violet M. Eastman new English department head at the high school. The training school aims for enrollment equal to or above last year while the Montana State Normal College starts September 12 with an earlier fall term and delayed spring term.

Funeral Services Held For Terence Flynn at Dillon

Terence Flynn a Beaverhead rancher died after a lingering illness at his Dillon area home. Funeral rites were conducted Monday at St Rose Church with Rev F X Lechner officiating and interment at Mountain View Cemetery. Flynn, born March 20 1847 in County Leitrim Ireland, had lived in Beaverhead since 1874 when he settled on his ranch with his family backing the community obituary notes his father's trade and Flynn's early schooling before emigrating to America in 1872.

Butte Man Walter LeWarren Found Dead Near Reichle Road

Walter LeWarren of Butte was found dead beside a road near Reichle last Friday morning. Authorities suspected a heart attack after seeing no injuries and determining natural causes. He had been camping along the river since Tuesday and was last seen at a pump in Reichle about 7 am before the discovery.

Golf Tournament at Dillon Country Club This Sunday

Thirty two golfers, possibly more, will compete in Dillon Country Club’s annual event at the new course north of the city. Four flights are set with matches starting 8 a m Sunday and finals on September 11. Notable pairings include W H Stephan versus Dale Tash and T Lee McCracken versus H M Brundage in the Championship Flight.

Dillon music studios prepare for the winter season with four instructors. L A Gregory enters 14th year offering band and orchestra training. he will direct the high school music department. Ralph McFadden opens a piano studio at Montana State Normal College on September 12 with registration starting then for high school and training school students.

Wisdom to Host Wildest Wild West Show With $1000 Prizes

Frank Reynolds announces a two day wild west show in Wisdom Montana under the Big Hole Horse association. Prizes total 1000 dollars and events include broncho busting bareback riding steer riding wild horse and mule races calf roping bulldogging wild cow milking and track races. Reynolds will supply rodeo stock and top riders from the state expected to compete.
