Helena diocese Catholic Women plan their sixteenth annual convention in Dillon for Sunday Monday and Tuesday with a high mass by Rev John Sullivan and a program including registration at St Rose hall and a social Monday evening. County Wins Approval On Its Savings
Beaverhead county earned praise from Fred Bennion secretary of the Montana Taxpayers association in a letter to Clerk and Recorder Albert S. Baker. Bennion commended strict adherence to spending less than budgeted and noted ample cash on hand across funds. The county board’s adopted budget is in today’s Examiner. Beaverhead’s tax levy for county purposes shows no increase over last year.

Hartwig Wins Dillon Golf Club Championship
W. B. Hartwig defeated 1936 titleholder H. M. Brundage five and four in the finals of the championship flight to become Dillon Country Club champion. Tom Hartwig won the first flight final over Jack Rees, while Guy Combes beat Whitey Palmer for the second flight and D. L. Johnson edged Clyde Stieb in the third. A post event driving contest saw Hartwig and Dave Williams win divisions with 244 and 231 yard drives respectively, and Alvin Jones along with John Wenger taking longest drive honors in other divisions.

First Smelter In State May Be Preserved
Beaverhead Mining association seeks quitclaim deed from Anaconda Copper to 100 by 100 foot plot near Argenta Montana to designate the old smelter ruins as a national monument. Bricks came from Swansea Wales for the furnace built in the 1860s and the site, once active, would attract visitors with county backing.

Beaverhead county commissioners met in extra session to handle pensions and related business. Caseworker Josephine Darling presented applications. all pension matters were sent back to the state welfare department. The board also canceled installment tax contracts with Montana Southwestern Railway and National Boston Montana Mines and directed the treasurer to file claims with receivers.

Howard Rosenau Claims Dillon Angling Crown With 14lb Trout
Howard Rosenau, Dillon’s champion angler, reeled in a 14 pound trout nearly 33 inches long from Beaverhead waters on the Big Hole river. The fish, believed to be the year’s largest in the area, fought for about thirty minutes before being brought to shore.

At least ten members of the Dillon Gun Club plan to enter a one day trapshoot sponsored by the Helena Gun Club on Sunday September 19.
