Dillon prepares August 28 to 30 for a Big Pow Wow Roundup with cash prizes funded by local business men who subscribed over a thousand dollars. Wortham Shows will spend the week in Dillon with twenty acts and concessions ahead of Helena, featuring rides and amusements for a full Exposition of wild west entertainment.
Herman Reis of Monida, a Beaverhead county resident well known in Centennial valley, is listed among General Pershing’s casualties for last Saturday. A 1917 draftee, he trained at Camp Lewis as a sharpshooter and was sent to France. His friends hope for news.
Nine more young Americans departed Saturday for Camp Fremont California including seven from Beaverhead and two transfers Archie Walters of Virginia Daniel Isaac Cooper of St Anthony Idaho Elza Patrick Raymond Swartz Edison Orr Albert Lohr Lee Jake Woodside and Lee Watkins This was the second Dillon departure in August with one more contingent due the 15th and the week of August 26 will bring the largest group Thirty two men from Class 1 of the 1917 draft will go to Camp Lewis Washington exhausting all Class 1 draftees.
Fire caused by a defective flue partially destroyed the second floor and roof of T. K. Julson’s cottage on South Washington street. Firemen saved neighboring houses. contents suffered water and smoke damage worth hundreds. The insured building belongs to Mrs. Margaret Edie. Elsewhere W G Reed reports progress on Twin Bridges project with plastering underway.
George Beerher pioneer of the lower Big Hole valley died last Saturday from a heart ailment. Born in Stuttgart Germany on April 24 1834 he enlisted in the Union army in the Civil War and was wounded, diaries from service are noted. He homesteaded near Reichle over 50 years ago and was married to Anna Schmidt 29 years ago. Survived by two daughters Julia Beerher and Mrs Neil Cummins and brother Charles Beerher. Funeral services were held at Reichle and remains shipped to Butte for burial beside his late wife.
The Elkhorn committee reports the plunge measuring 40 by 20 feet has cement work and plumbing finished and will be usable within a week. War delays push back dressing rooms and rest rooms until next summer but private baths will be added this summer. The open air plunge will remain free and a donor from Melrose gave $100 after rheumatism relief.
One hundred twenty business men and others pledged to bring Ellison-White attractions back in 1919 for the fifth time. The fourth annual Chautauqua closed with a larger crowd than any session, more than 400 pledges for adult season tickets indicated strong support, and Dr. Thomas praised local cooperation as he prepared to move to Billings.
Adolph Pahnisch and four other occupants escaped serious injury when steering failed, the touring car plunged off a bridge edge and rolled over after breaking through the railing. Pahnisch suffered two broken ribs. others were bruised and shaken. He had come from Grasshopper ranch to Dillon to secure hay and was returning home Friday evening near the bridge west of Rife street.
Dillon reports a busy building season despite the war with several new structures underway. The state at the Normal college plans a fireproof dormitory to be finished by October 15 providing space for growing attendance alongside two existing dormitories. Contractor W G Reed of Twin Falls oversees materials, plumbing, and wiring, with Boise sandstone foundation and Great Falls brick walls. The Turner system will equip fireproof reinforced concrete floors, maple flooring, tile corridors and baths. Basements will house recreation rooms. the building includes 34 sleeping rooms and other facilities at an estimated cost of 60 000 dollars. Concurrently Forest Bayerd nears completion of a city home on South Dakota street, Fred Woodside begins a bungalow on Rife street, and Fred Waldorf plans a city home near Orr and South Washington streets with location still under consideration.
Beaverhead county prepares for a heated second primary on August 27 with forty three aspirants for public office and two party tickets, Democratic and Republican. Registrations total 3402, up 268 since the last primary, with Dillon showing the largest growth across twenty two precincts. Leo H. Truax of Lima leads the Democratic side as a top contender, while Jess Finley of Jackson emerges as a rival candidate on the opposition ticket.
Governor White reports 1918 Beaverhead county wool clip at 3,074,482 pounds with total county earnings surpassing 1.33 million dollars. Montana's unofficial clip nears 21 million pounds. Beaverhead accounts for about one seventh of the state total. Widespread high prices may reach 65 cents per pound, with government appraisals pending in Boston.
Herbert L. Liggett killed his former wife Mrs. Sadie Liggett with a 32 Colts revolver at the Palace cafe on North Montana street then shot himself in the head. The coroner’s inquest found the death a murder by Liggett with the shooting occurring between 9 and 10 o'clock Monday evening.
