Beaverhead’s biggest wild west show returns to Dillon for a two day event under the Dillon volunteer fire department. Veteran promoter Jim Johnson leads the program featuring bucking horses, bronco riding, bulldogging, calf roping, chariot and saddle horse races, relay, pig race and bareback riding with street dances and novelty prizes promised each night.
Commencement for the fourth division of the class of 1935 was held at the college auditorium. Of 63 graduates, 49 earned two year diplomas and 14 received bachelor of education degrees. Speaker was Professor Rush Jordan. diplomas conferred by Frank Bliel of Dillon. Beaverhead students listed among diploma and degree recipients.
Brown University mathematics professor Dr. R. E. Gilman spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner about hopeful economic conditions in his section of the United States. He noted readjustment tasks ahead and complimented Montana visits. Dr. Robert E. Albright added remarks on current events and improving retail statistics with quicker loan repayments and steady price levels suggesting continued business volume and gradual recovery.
Harry Miller a ranch laborer near Dillon was attacked on Glendale street alley between Pacific and Atlantic while returning from carnival grounds. He was robbed of 29 dollars as two men allegedly dragged him unconscious into the alley and fled, with Miller and witnesses helping officers search the city.
The Beaverhead 4 H Livestock stock judging team competes in the North Montana fair at Great Falls this week. Members are Walt Shaffner Don Shaffner and Emerson Selway with coach Bernard Williams. County residents plan to attend the exposition.
Officials report bubonic plague killing gophers in southern Beaverhead County for years while a fungal outbreak reduces grasshopper numbers in some areas. Montana extension agents B L Strand Lewis Spain and Bernard Williams found poison bait effective and noted hoppers dying from the fungus. State health official William Jellison aided investigations around Dillon. Tom Morrow returns to Dillon after Stanford.
The outstanding attraction at the Zeiger carnival last week was the aerial act presented free each night. The Four Jacks climbed a 123 foot tower performing daring feats that left hundreds of spectators breathless and restless after dreaming of a fall. Johnny Gibson led the trio of acrobats.
The Beaverhead post of the American Legion will meet at city hall at 8 pm to elect delegates to the state convention in Anaconda and discuss important business. Commander J C Wedum will preside. this will be his last regular meeting.
The Beaverhead National Forest reported its first serious fire of the season was brought under control last Wednesday by CCC workers from Birch Creek camp and foresters. The fire started Tuesday at the head of Rock canyon west of Kidd, prompting rapid mobilization of CCC youths and equipment from Missoula including nine pack mules. Officials warned the forest remains dry and fire danger high, with strict no smoking rules except at homes or approved campsites and cautions for all forest users.
A telegram from B K Wheeler confirms President Roosevelt approved an 81818 loan to Montana State Normal college for reconstruction and improvement of the residence hall. The loan, funded by the state winter legislature bill by Joe Metlen, is payable from income. Postmaster Harry J Andrus also confirms Dillon's new post office contract awarded to Mead Mount Construction of Denver, with work likely to begin soon.
Honor students of the Class of 19365 at Montana State Normal College were announced at morning commencement in the college auditorium. The honor roll lists the top 20 percent by grade points per credit, alphabetically including Theodora Benson, Zelda Bible, Doris Binder, Anthony Bramaman, Thorward Brekke, and others.
Despite sheep numbers dropping in 1935, Montana ranked second in U S wool production with a 1935 clip of 31 825 000 pounds, surpassed only by Texas at 54 983 000 pounds. Montana also led states with an average fleece weight of 9.5 pounds, followed by Washington at 9.2 pounds, and Idaho and Wyoming tied for third at 9.0 pounds.
B B Paul 62 longtime Centennial valley native and Monida business figure died Saturday at his Los Angeles home. Born Feb 10 1873 in Marion Iowa he moved to Beaverhead county in 1893 and once owned Monida town and a general store. Survived by wife a daughter and a sister Mrs J J Jowel of Los Angeles and a brother Dr Paul of Perry Iowa. Funeral planned in Los Angeles.
Pauline Hartwig long-time Beaverhead county resident and wife of Reichle rancher Julius Hartwig died at Barrett Hospital at 67. Native of Montana she lived in the state all her life and in Beaverhead county for 42 years. Survived by husband two daughters Mrs John Hand of Argenta and Mrs Frank Kambich of Glendale a son Julius Jr of Dillon and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements not set.
National Woodcraft leaders from Portland visit Dillon for a three day sage hen season. Hunters report good luck with full daily limits, while ranchers protest the early opener arguing birds are not yet feathered and unable to fly. Juveniles perform rituals at Odd Fellows hall with six new members, followed by a banquet honoring guests.
Augustine Dugay aged 76 longtime Dillon resident died in a Butte hospital after a year of poor health. Born in 1859 in New Brunswick Canada he moved to Dillon in 1905 as a carpenter and later acquired property on Dakota Street. Survived by daughter Mrs Florence McTague of San Francisco son Joe of Butte and three brothers Fred Frank and George Dugay of California.
Commissioner Edgar B. Rife Clerk and Recorder Albert 8 Baker and Assessor O. M Best motored to Bozeman Saturday to attend to official county business.
Dillon merchant Lambert Eliel was elected president of the Associated Merchants of Montana at the Missoula convention. He previously served as treasurer and will be succeeded by Dillon’s E. W. Bond. Other attendees included A. S. Cashmore S. F. Erwin and Dr. R. E. Albright who gave an address.
The annual harvest day celebration in Wisdom will be held September 1 and 2. Formerly run by the Big Hole Stockmen's Association, it has been sponsored by B C Fetty in recent years. Fetty prepares for a rodeo that promises strong attendance after years of good crowds.
