A parade welcomed 1200 Dillon residents and Butte lodge members from the Sons of St George. Montana State Band provided music while businesses decorated in bunting. Prizes went to locals and a calm, festive day ended with safe travel home. no serious incidents reported.
A. 8. Johnson, Hudson agent for six southern Montana counties, recently sold a 1915 model to Ed Farley of Butte. Demand exceeds factory supply, with more Hudsons anticipated in Dillon by month’s end. Johnson covers Beaverhead, Madison, Silver Bow, Jefferson, Gallatin and Powell counties and has a 60 car 1915 season contract.
Work on the first story of the new vaults began yesterday under William G Reed and Company. The concrete foundation is nearly finished and steel construction will start soon. Eight men are employed by the contractors who aim to complete the project promptly.
Mrs. Frank Hull avoided a likely fatal car crash Monday evening while driving toward the Van Camp river bridge. Her presence of mind near the ranch vicinity at about 5 40 p m prevented a serious accident.
Reports filed with Dr. M A Walker show twelve births in Beaverhead County in July with nine girls. Listings include families from Bannack Argenta Monida Dillon Dell Mondia and Dillon towns. dates range July 1 to July 28 with two July 20 entries.
Redmen center fielder Taylor Bradley broke a bone in his right leg while sliding into second base after a hit in the Dillon versus Butte Electrics game last Sunday. Bradley, out of action for weeks, is recuperating at home as doctors monitor the injury.
Dr. M. A. Walker traveled to Sheep Creek basin last Monday night and returned early the next day. He reported roads near Sheep Creek in remarkably good condition and among the best in the county. The Dell to Sheep Creek ascent rises about 1000 feet over 18 miles, yet steep grades were easy due to improved roadbeds. The Dell to upper Sheep Creek harmn trip took about one hour.
A man reported to the police he was robbed of $30 and most of his clothes last Saturday afternoon. Officers found remaining clothing pieces with about $10 in pockets, concluding the man, intoxicated and disheveled, misplaced his garments while in a drunken stupor and forgot the events.
Beaverhead County assessor Norman Holden reports the 1920 valuation at 7 551 580 exclusive of railroad assessments, down from 7 648 278 in 1918. Real property totals 4 080 800, personal property 8 470 780, ranch land 2 661 529, town lots 1 015 438, livestock by category: horses 441 405 cattle 1 644 126 sheep 310 694. County commissioners will fix the next year’s tax rate.
Beaverhead county plans a strong display at the Montana State Fair September 21 to 26 in the Agricultural building. A $500 appropriation funds the booth, aiming to match last year’s prize winning presentation with artistic grain ceilings. Joe Nash of Clyde Park will collect the county’s grains and grasses for the exhibit.
Dillon Redmen won 9 to 8 over the Butte Electrics after a tense extra inning showdown on the local grounds. Key plays included Toomey’s right field catch and Duff scoring on a two-base hit sequence, with Gallagher and Gilbert contributing. Sunday an exhibition game for Taylor Bradley’s benefit is planned, with more details to be announced.
L F Murphy and Sol Willard were arrested on gambling charges by Constable Jas Burgess. They were bound over to the district court in $500 bonds after a Wisdom justice of the peace trial. Burgess took them to Dillon where they remain jailed awaiting district court trial. Murphy is accused of running the game and chips and money were found on them plus Murphy was caught selling chips.
Miss Zina Cox of this city accidentally discharged a small caliber revolver while fooling with it on Horse Prairie last Friday. The bullet entered her breast above the heart. Dr. Ryburn dressed the wound and she was moved to Dillon Monday where she is fast recovering.
Roy Jackson and companions traveled to Jackson last Monday with Mrs Lucy Spencer staying there. The rest returned via Bannack. Ideal haying weather has prevailed in Big Hole with little rain and no stoppages. In Grasshopper Will Tash finished haying and moved his crew into Dillon.
Mr and Mrs Josiah Bowden and family returned to Dillon from Hecla where Bowden had served as superintendent. The Hecla properties are now in the hands of a watchman. Sixty workers were left jobless as operations ended after daily shipments of five to six tons of concentrate.
County clerk handles petitions as candidates rush to file for the nominating election on August 25. By now, about sixty names have been filed seeking party nomination.
Donald Owen and Rube Swanson were arrested last Friday near Bannack by Undersheriff Scully and J E David of the Beaverhead National Forest department. They allegedly stole two horses from a Jackson hitching rack, hid the saddles in a deserted shed, and disposed of the animals in Bannack. The men were arraigned in Dillon before Justice Kenis with bonds set at $500 and the preliminary trial scheduled for August 11. Authorities suspect connections to a white slavery case in Idaho Falls.
A south wind of high speed struck Dillon Monday night causing scattered property damage. Several large trees fell in the residential area, resembling a storm two weeks earlier. The Montana Mercantile on Montana Street suffered a broken window, while farms had minimal damage and rain followed the wind for about an hour.
George Ditty of this city will supply about thirty outlaw horses and thirty bucking mules for the roundup to be held next month. The animals come from a Miles City horseman after negotiations completed last Monday. The herd includes vicious horses trained to throw riders, promising a spectacular event with top riders from Montana Idaho and Wyoming competing.
Undersheriff W T Scully with Oscar Dunn took three convicted men M C Moore John Williams and J L Carlson from Dillon to Deer Lodge to serve one year each. The transport followed a county jail stay and a brief depot ride in a single car. The criminals enjoyed the rare excursion before penitentiary confinement.
Warren Selway and Miss Mable Brock will wed at the Sheridan Methodist church at high noon tomorrow. Afterward they will dine at the Brock ranch near Alder and plan to move to Missoula. They are prominent local residents with deep ties to Dillon and Alder.
Three offenders were fined a total of 80 dollars in a police court last Monday morning by Judge Phillips. Frank O'Brien pleaded not guilty to drunkenness and robbing a depot mailbox. evidence led to conviction and a 20 dollar fine or 10 days in county jail. George Stroud was fined 15 dollars for drunken and disorderly conduct. Harrison received a 5 dollar fine for his similar misdemeanor.
Work on the new city hall was halted after a petition urged installing a raised or sloping auditorium floor instead of a flat one. City council meeting tonight will decide. contractor William G Reed & company paused activity last week with twelve men dismissed. Reed favors the proposed sloping floor plan.
Jerry Driscoll an aged resident of the city faced arraignment before County Attorney Stephenson on a cruelty charge from a neighbor. The man admitted no abuse but promised to turn the horse out to pasture. He was released in a weakened condition similar to the animal.
