Beaverhead tax levy to remain near last year level

Beaverhead county plans show little to no tax increase for the coming fiscal year with most offices not exceeding a 10 percent rise over prior budgets. Preliminary figures list expenditures for many departments including commissioners 3350, clerk and recorder 8075, sheriff 9350, district court 8872.50, and other county services. note continuation on page 4.

Dillon Girl Attends Silver Jubilee Camp

Miss Dorothy Ann Davis of Dillon joins the silver jubilee encampment for Girl Scouts at Camp Andree near Briarcliff Manor New York representing Montana and the Rocky Mountain region along with Miss Helen Sanding Great Falls and Miss Patricia Rounce Sidney. She travels via Pocatello to join Idaho Utah Wyoming and Nevada scouts with stops in Chicago and Niagara Falls and plans a Washington return. Thirty foreign countries are represented and local support is thanked by the Dillon council.

Local Girls Club entertains Dillon Rotary with piano and song

The Dillon Rotary Club dinner meeting featured Miss Jane Waldorf and Miss Helen Wilkinson delivering a musical program. Waldorf played May Night and Viennese Dance, while Wilkinson and Waldorf sang O That It Were So, By the Waters of Minnetonka, and Come to the Fair. Dr. R D Curry presided as chairman.

The quarterly conference of the Methodist church will be held tonight at the church with Rev Reuben Dutton of Missoula district superintendent in attendance.

New Scenic Area To Open In Beaverhead County

A forest service CCC project will open one of Beaverhead county s most scenic areas next year. A road from Brown s Lake to Lake Agnes will be built and 16 miles of highway from Highway 91 to Brown s Lake will be improved. A two mile road will skirt Brown s Lake east shore and a bridge will cross the slough at the lake s upper end. The completion is expected to make Lake Agnes a popular picnic site in this region.

Dramatic Classes Offer College Plays This Week

Beaverhead lambs reach a new high as Selway Sheep Co sells a lot for nine cents and lambs to be shipped as feeders to midwestern states. College drama students present four plays this afternoon and tonight including Saved and Sparkin Op o Me Thumb The Cradle Song. Admission is free and both students and townspeople are invited.

Summer Term Extension Granted for Unemployment Payments

Montana Employers receive extended deadline to August 10 for unemployment contributions due to new relief system. Barclay Craighead of the Unemployment Compensation Commission cites contact delays and data gathering issues impacting compliance. About 3,000 contributions received by July end. an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 delinquent. Mrs. Frank Fiddler of Melrose visited Dillon on Saturday.

Commencement Plans Set For Summer Quarter

The summer quarter graduates finalize commencement week with multiple committees led by Miss Genevieve Donaldson. The senior dinner Sunday August 9 features music and toasts. diploma ceremonies follow Wednesday August 11 at 10 oclock with a list of diploma candidates including Genevieve Donaldson and Elsie Kirby.

Children of State Home Visit Dillon Carnival

About 250 children from the Montana State Orphans Home at Twin Bridges visited Dillon. Local residents arranged free rides at the P W Witt carnival and W B Hartwig hosted a free matinee of Trader Horn at the Hartwig theatre. Businessmen funded hot dogs ice cream and punch for the youngsters. The group arrived around 11 am, rode the rides, enjoyed lunch, and attended a noon matinee before returning home at 4 pm.

Local Nine Loses Close State League Game to Butte

Butte Silver Bow Parks beat Dillon 4 to 1 in a tight state league contest last Sunday here. Van Ruden pitched well for Dillon with 10 strike outs and held the game in reach, while Dillon errors produced three Butte runs. Koprivkca led Butte with four hits as Lee added two. Eight Dillon games remain, three at home, and in a prior exhibition Shreveport Colored Giants defeated Dillon 7–0 with Vandegrift and Burles pitching.

Dillon Chamber of Commerce Launches Membership Drive

Dillon's newly organized Chamber of Commerce launched a two team membership drive with six volunteers led by Mayor D A Galt. The effort aims to unite local business on Beaverhead county projects and publicize regional opportunities while planning an August 9 meeting to elect officers and adopt by laws. George Scott and Bert Orr Jr. were in Dillon from Centennial valley earlier in the week.

Attendance figures for Montana summer school programs

The state’s summer school enrollment totals about 1200 students, down from 1622 in 1935 and 1782 in 1925. Decline credited to reduced teachers salaries and standardization of certificates to two-year college level. Assembly today at 2 pm features a dramatics department play directed by Genevieve Green. On Wednesday at 8 15 pm the department presents one-act plays Sparkin directed by Pearl Anderson, Opome-Thumb by Rose Gorshe, and Cradle Song act one directed by Henry Edwards.

Body of Edgar Roat Found After Car Plunges

Edgar L. Roat a Butte painter was drowned Friday night when his car went over a steep cliff on the Big Hole river route from his Dewey summer home to Butte. Motorists saw the wreck Saturday noon. Sheriff Temple and others searched. the body was found Sunday morning about 50 yards downstream. Roat was rendered unconscious in the plunge and drowned after being thrown clear of the car.

Jackson 10 Stage Rodeo This Month

Jackson will stage its annual rodeo Saturday and Sunday August 21 and 22 under Sam Freeman who directs Beaverhead county arena shows. The Reynolds string of horses, famed buckers, will return as top riders vie for thrill and spectators from Dillon Butte and Anaconda are expected.

Dr Albright to Teach Sociology in Buffalo New York

Dr Albright released from University of Montana Missoula may accept post as professor of sociology and head of department at State Teachers College Buffalo New York. He will teach sociology tied to home economics industrial arts and high school fields and direct student research in social agencies in Buffalo. The college enrolls about 1100 students with 300 freshmen each year. The Albright family plans to depart Dillon around August 20 via Lincoln Nebraska and Chicago to Buffalo.

Dillon Man Named as Patrolman

Clarence B. Thibadeau of Dillon is among 14 new Montana state highway patrolmen appointed recently. He will undergo a 30 day training at Helena starting August 9 and then be assigned to his district. The training school is led by Captain Rudy Schmoke of the California State Police. The course covers police science traffic safety and enforcement of Montana highway regulations.

Forest Officials Visit Big Hole in Northwest

A party of forest officials toured the Big Hole Sunday. They were hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Ramsey at the ranger station. East visitors praised the valley’s vast virgin landscape, productivity, and scenery during the outing. Governor is listed among the attendees.

Former Dillon Resident Dies at Ocean Beach

Mrs. Margaret Hayter Williams, 65, formerly of Dillon, died July 17 at Ocean Beach California. She lived in Dillon for many years and was a member of Mizpah chapter Order of Eastern Star. Survived by daughter Marjorie Williams of Ocean Beach and son Lincoln of Stockton with brother-in-law E H Williams of Dillon.
