Charles Henry is to address the college graduation exercises at the college auditorium next Wednesday morning. The ceremony will honor graduates and mark the academic year's close with Henry delivering the principal address before faculty and guests.
A 12-year-old Dillon boy slipped toward a deep riverbank while chasing a gopher near a highway bridge north of Ion. Oberem nearby leaped in to save the boy, pulling him to shore after a swift current struggle.
Montana State Normal college sophomores will receive two year diplomas at the summer quarter commencement next Wednesday in the college auditorium. Charles Henry to speak, continuing the tradition of a faculty member delivering the address. Commencement begins with Sunday baccalaureate services and graduates dinner. term ends August 12.
Local Dillon children perform delightful plays at Normal College auditorium on Saturday afternoon under the college children’s play class. Features include The Emperor’s New Clothes with a royal Sartoria cast and The Elf Child, a woodland fantasy. Cast list highlights Ryan Dodge as Emperor and Eloise Graves as Empress among others.
Dillon Rotary heard reports from delegates at recent state gatherings. Sam Wilkinson summarized the Montana Bankers Association meeting at Glacier Park. Commander Louis Schmittroth shared notes on the American Legion state convention in Kalispell. A Helena Rotary invitation to the state fair was read. John Vanderark sang two vocal solos with Ralph McFadden on piano.
Attorney J E Kelley returns from Flathead Lake where he stayed at his brother Dan Kelly of Butte summer home. Mrs Kelly and son James stay another week at the lake while Ruth and Lucille Kelly visit relatives in Butte.
Mr and Mrs Jack Barrett motor to Jackson today and will be accompanied home by Chicky Ross who has been visiting at the James Woody ranch.
The Montana Idaho picnic becomes a dedication ceremony at Sacajawea park on the continental divide head of Trail Creek. Daughters of the American Revolution Beaverhead Lemhi Mining Beaverhead National Forest organize. Dr Grace Raymond Hebard will speak. many state officials historians and residents plan to attend.
Dr. Carl B. Taylor of Dillon was named to the Montana Optometric Association board at its Bozeman convention where a three day graduate clinic was held at Hotel Baxter led by Dr. A. M. Skeffington. In Centennial valley a teen sheepherder spread fear claiming shots were fired near Monida by two escaped Deer Lodge convicts, later revealed as a self-inflicted ruse to avoid mockery.
Beaverhead post and Dillon auxiliary attend Kalispell conventions with E L Fairbanks and Louis Schmittroth as delegates. State purchasing agent E G Murphy plans to buy 3 756 000 gallons of oil for August contracts. about six million gallons already purchased and in use for the Armstead to Monida 45 mile improvement.
Alter Crump of Dillon wins the Beaverhead county poor farm improvements contract for 1200 dollars beating W T Morrison at 1684 and Tom Moen at 1470. Board of commissioners meets for final budget and plans to hold tax levy near last year despite reduced valuation.
Wise River merchant KE Harvey officially filed for the Republican nomination for state representative after receiving 56 primary votes. He previously ran for the same office six years ago and will face incumbent Joe Metlen in the general election. George Banks of Dillon also filed acceptance of the Republican nomination for public administrator with Clerk Albert B.
Delegations from every city in Southwestern Montana will attend a two day rodeo and carnival in Dillon on Labor Day weekend September 4 and 6. The plan includes rodeo events horse racing a rock drilling contest barbecue bathing beauty contest tug of war pig race and street dancing among other features. Ott Gordon is secretary with O. T. Vanderift Art Halls and William Angove on the committee.
The Montana Woolgrowers Association will postpone its usual ram sales due to early Montana State Fair dates. The first auction will be in Billings on September 8, with a second sale in Great Falls between October 10 and 15. Committee members include Peter Pauly, J H Carmichael, H C Gardner, Gus Stambaugh, Louis Vinke, W A Denacke, and A E Westlake.
Board of trustees will likely issue a contract for installing a stoker and upgrading the heating plant at Beaverhead County High School at an upcoming meeting in August.
A man identified as Donald Bayerd died Friday at Lovell's Lake after a heart attack during a suspected attempted swim across the lake. Rescue crews found him unresponsive and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Joe Ryburn rushed to save Donald Bayerd on Lovell's Lake near Dillon after Bayerd, 19, attempted a 200 yard crossing with companions Donald Light and Barney O'Keefe. Bayerd disappeared after a three time submersion. divers recovered the body at about 4 15 p m as flood gates lowered the lake level and rescuers searched the waters.
Dillon's crack gunners attended the Utah state shoot in Salt Lake City with E. W. Renfro of Dell topping the field. Roy Forrester won the 16 yard event with 124x125 while W. E. Tallent placed runner up in handicap. Other members include Ross Emerick B G Free Vic and Pete Wargaard and Otto Schulz. Forrester recently received a trophy from the A T A for winning Montana state singles and ranks high nationally.
Dillon is among spectators for the Olympic games in Los Angeles. Dr and Mrs R D Curry depart by car for the event to visit friends and attend the games. A group of four local youths Warren Stone Jr Bill Rowland Al Simpson and Chester Melton travel in a vividly illustrated Model T Ford edition.
Henry Cahill longtime Dillon resident and former Madison County rancher died after a long illness at Warm Springs last Thursday night. He was 67, born in Virginia City, and lived in Ruby Valley ranching with his family before retiring in 1919 to Dillon. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Rose Catholic Church with interment in Mountain View Cemetery. Surviving are his widow and four sisters Mrs Mary Carey Sheridan and Mrs Elizabeth Stone Mrs Kate McDonald and Mrs Charles Metzel Alder.
Governor Erickson proclaims Tuesday November 8 as the general election day in Montana. The proclamation lists statewide offices county and legislative races presidential electors and state constitutional amendments to be voted on. It notes officers will be elected to fill any vacancy existing in any office.
Dillon beat Butte Broadway Garage 10 to 6 as Callahan Vandegrift and Warren led the offense. Bannack ILB Mining won 10 to 6 against a Butte Rocker aggregation with Ward and Warren at the plate. The Colored House of David tour team defeated the locals 10 to 3 in the best attended game of the year.
Paul Temple of Dillon is appointed deputy sheriff by Sheriff W C Orr, taking effect immediately. He succeeds W E Barry, now undersheriff, and will be stationed in the Dillon office. Temple has been a Dillon resident for years and led the community relief headquarters last spring.
