Dillon recorded a high of 98 degrees on Sunday tying the all time high as residents sought relief in mountain streams. Earlier in the week 97 degrees was reached marking the third 96+ reading this season with July 17 27 and 30 noted for extreme temperatures. No injuries were reported despite heavy hayfield work as nights stayed cool providing relief.
Beaverhead county tax data for 1934 lists a total levy of 4 815 574 with taxable valuation at 4 815 674, up 79 063 from the prior year. Dillon and Lima show increases in assessed and taxable figures, while state totals reflect a statewide rise in valuations. Continued discussion on the next page.
Several Dillon firms found counterfeit dimes in their cash registers Sunday after a coin passer toured the city and left for other points. Sheriff James A. McCollum was alerted by victims but the suspect escaped. John Henson pleaded guilty to killing elk out of season in Judge George Opp's court and paid a $200 fine, choosing to serve it in jail. Hansen, an employee at the George Selway ranch in Divide, was arrested in Wise River by Deputy Game Warden Charles Price.
Beaverhead County officials seek drought relief area status after a county meeting at the courthouse. Ranchers from the southern end described severe conditions, with Centennial valley and surrounding areas among hardest hit. A telephoned assurance from drought relief director J C Taylor followed by commissioner W B Hartwig.
Three one act plays directed by Myrtle Savidge entertained a large audience at the college auditorium. The Bishop's Candlesticks featured Helen Ida Best and Helen Taylor with a supporting cast. Between the Soup and the Savoury starred Margery Fisher Ruth Phelps and Martha Marie Frost. Red Carnations featured Georgia Metlen Cecil Musburger and Henry Edwards. Interludes included piano duets by Marguerite Collins and Kenneth Barry and vocal numbers by Collins. Cc Burden visited from Spencer Idaho to attend to business interests.
Beaverhead county recorded a notably high primary turnout with 2,699 of 3,844 registered electors voting, about 70.2 percent. In Dillon city precincts 1,455 of 1,965 voters cast ballots, while outlying precincts showed lighter participation at 66.2 percent. Sheriff received the most votes with 2,558 counted.
John Hildreth from Horse Prairie, one of the water commissioners, was in town Monday confirming his official role and local commitments.
The Salt Lake to Great Falls airline, now run by Alfred Frank, marks seven years in intermountain service after flying over three and a half million miles at about 98 percent schedule. Governor Joseph B. Poindexter, a former Dillon man, welcomed President Roosevelt on his Hawaii visit, greeting him in Hilo and again at Honolulu dock before the president stayed as a guest of the Poindexters and their family though the text ends abruptly.
A two day rodeo will be staged in Wisdom in the Big Hole basin on September 2 and 3 under Ted Harper post of the American Legion. The event features broncho busting steer riding bull dogging calf roping and races with dances and other Legion events. Veterans from the mining district will attend for a Legion convention alongside the rodeo.
Mrs. B. F. Bratcher formerly Eunice Conway of Dillon died suddenly in Washington DC. She was born August 24 1898 in Glendale and was the youngest daughter of George B. and Mrs. Conway, pioneer Glendale residents who later lived in Dillon.
Firemen and volunteers mobilized for the first major blaze of the year in Dillon area. About a hundred men left Dillon on Saturday and Sunday for Carmine Creek on the continental divide between the Bitterroot and the Big Hole basin. The fire burned along a half mile front toward the Big Hole, starting roughly a mile from the divide.
Jack Gilbert, 17, from Dillon Country Club,First held to finals by Rudy Merhar in Billings state tournament. He defeated Bud Linville earlier, nearly forcing a tying putt on the 18th after a string of strong play. He is son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Gilbert.
Montana auditors called the ratification an empty gesture as only seven counties reported on electing delegates for a ratification convention. The tally showed 3083 in favor and 613 against ratification with Stillwater Wheatland and Carter counties reporting small counts.
Dr. James McCluer Matthews of Babson Institute, Boston, was guest speaker at the Dillon Rotary dinner. He argued the economy is improving versus 18 months ago and foresees continued gains as heavy industries gain swing and debt levels are not yet alarming. He praised American problem solving and noted slow progress of planned economy away from rugged individualism.
Beaverhead county hosts a two day Dillon rodeo with prizes totaling $50 $30 and $20 per daily division. Promoters include L Ott Gordon and the Beaverhead Farmers Union with Jim Johnson of Jackson and Fred Gill of Wise River bringing wild horse strings. Food preservation classes run by Montana extension agents Miss Lillian Stone and Miss Frances Smith open at Dillon High School on poultry canning with several county dates following.
Paul Henneberry's Canyon resort south of Dillon hosts a Saturday night tune event with the Canyon orchestra playing popular past favorites and old-time music. A prize waltz offers a cash prize at 1 am as dancing runs from 10 pm to early morning with lunch served. last Saturday's carnival dance drew the Canyon's largest crowd.
Commencement for the August class will be held in the college auditorium next Wednesday morning with Miss Elizabeth Ireland state superintendent of public instruction as speaker. The term featured talks by James McClure Matthews of Babson Institute and readings by Miss Nelle Weston, noted for dialect mastery.
At the Montana bankers annual meeting held at Canyon hotel in Yellowstone National Park, Robert M. Barrett of this city was elected vice-president of the Montana bank section of the American Banking Association. Barrett is president of the State Bank & Trust Company. He attended with Mrs. Barrett. J. G. Gilbert and J. W. Rees of the First National Bank were also present with their wives. Mr. and Mrs. Den Randolph spent the weekend at Wade Lake.
John H. Gilbert Jr an outstanding Beaverhead County High School graduate has won an entrance scholarship to the University of Chicago valued at 150 dollars covering half tuition for the first year. He ranked high in scholarship served as class president junior year and senior year and earned further honors.
Memorial services for the late Rt. Rev. Bishop W. F. Faber, head of the Episcopal diocese in Montana, who died of exposure in Glacier Park, were held Monday morning at St. James Episcopal Church. The Rev. H. N. Tragitt conducted the services, largely attended by Dillon friends of the late bishop.
