Beaverhead county struggles to reach its Victory loan allotment with less than 60 percent subscribed after a strenuous two day drive. A. A. Rogers reports Ninth district progress, noting record oversubscription in earlier loans, the shift to wide distribution, and the goal to educate the public on government securities and thrift.
Friday evening at the high school gymnasium the ceremony opens with four numbers by Gregory's orchestra. Rev. H. G. Humphrey gives the invocation followed by a high school Glee Club selection. Mayor J. H. Gilbert delivers the commencement address and later presents diplomas. The program closes with a march by Gregory's orchestra.
Seventeen Beaverhead County High School seniors will receive diplomas next Friday evening after a week of final exams. Graduates include Thelma Jensen and Ruth Innes in commercial work, Edwin Anderson and Bernard Williams in agricultural work, Mazie Bouquin and others in domestic science, and students in mathematics natural science social science and languages. The commencement week ends with the banquet tonight.
Beaverhead county high school alumni association holds an annual reunion and banquet at the Andrus hotel this evening. Special entertainment comes from Butte, an eight course banquet is served in the grill. George M. Mélton class of 1907 will be master of ceremonies and Wilbur G. Gilbert will give an address of welcome to returned soldiers and sailors. Kinsey Collins will respond to the toast for the veterans and Thelma Jensen will respond for the class of 1919.

Other faculty did not apply. Mr Hunt of Glendive newly elected principal tendered resignation and another principal will be elected soon.
Hurley Leach sold the Cottonwoods ranch three miles south of town for about 600 acres. The deal excluded his interests on the upper Blacktail. Berg Christensen, buyer, recently sold sheep interests in Madison county to Metzel and Prather.
The Eastern Star invites the public to a dance next Monday evening May 5 at Dillmont park to benefit Masonic soldiers and their families. The event is billed as one of the city’s gayest affairs in a long time.
Two Greek proprietors operating a fruit store in the Hartwig theater building were fined ten dollars each yesterday for selling cigarettes without a license. Both paid the fines.
A jury failed to reach a verdict in the Fred Hansen case accused of violating state game laws after several hours of deliberation. The hung jury postpones a decision on the misdemeanor counts and the judge may declare a mistrial or retry.
Ronald Brown and Joe Turner from Carlton Oregon and Meyers Falls Washington arrived in Dillon. Meyers Falls man recently bought a famed Larabee herd of registered Shorthorn cattle said to be the world's largest such bunch.
Dillon Montana April 29 1919. County Clerk to Board of County Commissioners explains that if H B No 30 had been in effect the assessor would have had to report real values as shown to complete 1918 books. The clerk notes H B No 30 has no state board control and presents properties to be assessed to derive 1918 assessment results.
Mrs Guy Stuckey a public health nurse for the Montana Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis has spent weeks examining rural Beaverhead county children and is now at Dillon schools. She plans to finish this week and submit a full report.
A cattle sale will be held at Dell on Saturday with about 1,000 stock cattle and some registered bulls offered at public auction. Leading southern county cattlemen seek to reduce herds and present a finely bred stock. C. A. Smith serves as auctioneer.
Joe Turner of Meyers Falls Washington spent the week in Dillon and will remain. He recently purchased the Larabee herd of pure-blood registered Short horn cattle from the Gilbert Livestock company. Turner, an authority on this cattle grade, expects to dispose of many animals in this part of Montana.
A man named Latham or Munford was stopped near Barretts by Officer Mooney while fleeing Beaverhead County into Idaho with over 500 dollars worth of furs allegedly obtained from Bill Gray. Gray detected two bad checks for 450 and 60 dollars and notified the bank, then the sheriff. Lathram claimed to be a representative of the Chicago Hide and Fur company.
Thursday evening events include a two act play Cupid in Khaki with cast Evelyn Lloyd Ruth In nes Thelma Jensen Elvera Grant Charles Thomas Edwin Anderson and Quentin Klein. Miss Stella Mayfield reads the class. Miss Marie Bourquin presents class prophecy on historian Miss Genelva Baker. Special music will be rendered.
The late Ray Maurer received a military funeral at the Dillon Methodist church with soldiers as pallbearers and an overseas firing squad. Born September 11, 1888 in Bolling Green Indiana, he served in both the Spanish-American War era and World War I, earning a frontline role and overcoming shell shock before dying in Minnesota after hospital care. His service was honored with reflection on duty, sacrifice, and the duty to preserve liberty.
A group of city musicians organize the Sunset orchestra led by Lon Linson violinist and manager. Ann Schafer is the pianist Fielding Gray drums Alderic Tessier banjo and Fred Staudaher saxophone. The group plans dances in Dillon and Dell with a May 7 Sheridan performance and May 9 Virginia City followed by a May 10 Eagle dance in Sheridan.
George Huling traveled to Butte yesterday afternoon. The brief note confirms the excursion and location but provides no further details on purpose or outcome.
Frank Hazelbaker reports three major deals closed including Pyle Brothers purchasing part of Nay Brothers Murray place on Grasshopper Creek. The 1880 acre tract sold for 40000 dollars near the Pyle operations to support their cattle outfit. Andy Pyle then sold 640 acres near the Tash place to W S Tash. Dan Pendergast bought Woodworth ranch, a 1100 acre parcel in the Big Hole basin, with immediate possession by the new owners.
W H Meek a 33 year old man was taken from a Short Line passenger train and charged with making seditious remarks against the government. He cursed the army and praised Bolsheviks before being bound over to federal authorities on a $5000 bond. I W W literature was found on him.
The junior prom at the high school gym marked the start of weeklong festivities. Fourteen juniors with Miss Connell produced a royal display with green and white decor, a lattice stage, a punch booth, and 24 dances. Dancing continued until midnight.
Ed Ely, a three year Drummond resident and former local business owner, purchased the J Jensen shoe shop. He plans a May 5 opening with enlargement and new machinery to operate one of the area’s best shoe shops. Ely served in the U S Army and is a skilled shoemaker.
