Pioneer rancher Ryurnest W. Geary dies in Beaverhead County

Ryurnest W. Geary a prominent Beaverhead county rancher died at his Lima area home after a long illness. He had lived in the region for nearly fifty years. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at his ranch home south of Lima.

Five Boy Scouts Pass Life Saving Tests

Five Dillon Boy Scouts passed swimming and life saving tests before the board of review at the Normal college plunge last Thursday night. They were Melbourne Jackson, Jack Reeves, Roy Forrester, George Webster and James Kelly. Recommendations for merit badges were granted to James Kelly, Bob Lee, Jack Selway, Dudley Peterson, Wilbur Gilburt Jr., Win Best and Bill Bayerd.

Community Event Postponed for Barrett Hospital Grounds

Community field day has been postponed from last Sunday due to storms and will be held next Sunday at Barrett hospital grounds. Attendance urged for all able bodied men to volunteer or send a substitute. Luncheon served by Legion auxiliary at Cornell's grove. Services at St James church 9 am, grounds work starts 10 am. County Child Welfare council hosts Friday program at 2 pm honoring National Child Health Day with entertainment, talks, and student performances from Reichle and Junior high.

Rites Held for Father Daniel Foley Kalispell Priest

Funeral services for Father Daniel Foley former Kalispell hospital chaplain and Somers pastor were held at St Matthew Church. Bishop Finnigan celebrated Pontifical Requiem Mass with priests from across the diocese including Father Maurice Foley of Seattle and Father O'Shea of Whitefish delivering the eulogy. About 40 priests participated as diocesan officials led the rites.

Beaverhead county high school's track squad heads to the annual mining district track and field meet in Butte next Saturday under Butte Central. Top teams from Helena Bozeman Anaconda Dillon and others enter the largest meet in its history. Coach Brick Breeden plots a strong showing with Exum Tomey Stahl and W Stephan in sprints hurdles and other events.

Wage Scale for Help Fixed in Forest Meet

Beaverhead national forest officials fixed the seasonal wage scale in Dillon. The new rates cut more than ten percent from the prior schedule. Experienced men earn 90 dollars monthly with board or 75 dollars with board. new men 80 dollars with board or 65 with board. labor 3.50 dollars daily with board or 2.75 with board. fire fighters 25 cents per hour. teams 2.00 dollars per team and 1.50 for additional teams to form fours and sixes.

Former Dillon Resident Dies in New Mexico at 62

Silas R. Eldridge, longtime Dillon area resident, died in Farmington New Mexico on April 2 at age 62. He moved to Dillon in 1903 from Kansas City and lived on the East Bench homestead until 1911. He is survived by his mother two daughters a son and two sisters.

Montana PTA convention to be held in Dillon next week

Delegates from 14 associations in Western Montana will attend the Montana Congress of Parents and Teachers district convention in Dillon on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 3 and 4. A reception at the Hazelbaker home will be held next Monday evening.

Four nabbed for theft of Dillon automobile

A young man and three girls were arrested in Idaho and Utah for stealing Lieut. Gov. Hazelbaker's Plymouth coupe from his garage. The car was recovered in Downey Idaho. Cooper resisted arrest and was shot in the arm during detention. The four were bonded to federal court on Dyer Act charges. two girls were released after dismissal.

Dillon Choral Club to Stage Spring Concert May 11

The Dillon Choral Club directed by Mrs. W. G. Gilbert will perform a spring concert on Wednesday May 11 at 8 o'clock in the training school auditorium. Selections include Cadman pieces and a piano solo by Mary E. Farrell with the Orange Crush Orchestra providing intermission music. Admission is free.

Armstead Men to Host Dillon Rotary May 5 Dinner

Members of the Dillon Rotary club will be guests of Armstead business men and ranchers at a dinner in Armstead on May 5. Parke T. Scott extended the invitation and it was accepted. Fred Chapman Chester Hale and T Lee McCracken were named to arrange transportation. An address continued on page 8.

Don Oliver, Beaverhead Ranch Worker, Dies at 71

Tanley Dunon Oliver, longtime Beaverhead county ranch laborer, died after a brief illness at Barrett hospital last Thursday. Funeral services were held Saturday at Brundage chapel with Rev. R. C. Shannon officiating. Interment followed in Mountain View cemetery. Oliver, 71, a native of Ontario, Canada, came to Montana over 50 years ago and naturalized in Great Falls in 1886. He had lived in Beaverhead county since 1906 and worked as a herder on area ranches.

Two Teenagers Arrested for City Drug Store Break-In

Aane Griffith, 17, and Donald Griffith, 16, are jailed in Beaverhead County after Butte police arrested them on a Friday night break-in at City Drug Company. About $800 in loot, largely from W. E. Selner’s jewelry stock, was recovered. Detectives Rodda and Roe identified stolen items, with pawned binoculars and a wristwatch among the haul.

Modern Woodmen to Entertain at Hall Tonight

Dillon camp of the Modern Woodmen of America hosts a program at Odd Fellows hall for new members initiated recently. All Woodmen and ladies invited, with dancing, cards, and a buffet supper at 11 o clock following the entertainment.

Funeral for Pennington Ford Held in Dillon

The funeral of Pennington Ford, a Dillon man, who died after a brief illness last Wednesday, was held Saturday afternoon at the First Baptist church. The Rev. R. O. Shannon officiated and interment followed in Mountain View cemetery with Mrs. Charles Kohl and Mr. Kohl of Helena attending the services.

Dillon Gun Club Nets Second Straight 75 in State Shoot

Dillon Gun Club shot a perfect 75 to tie Sheridan for second place in the Montana Standard state telegraphic shoot. Butte maintained first after a Miles City default. Billings and Missoula shared second. Forrester Tallent and Ross each hit 25 straight as Dillon posted its second consecutive perfect score. Sheridan’s Johnny Grattes and Henry Snyder led with 26s, while Frank Tolson and Art Ellinghouse added 24s for a 74 Madigan club. Club standings show Butte first, Billings and Dillon tied for second with .750 and .760 percentages respectively.

A Beaverhead ranchers conference with District Judge Lyman H Bennett at the city hall Monday night outlined a plan to ensure even water distribution to all irrigated tracts in the county. A committee of water users was appointed to work with the judge.
