Salt needs for cattle linked to feed and milk output
Extension dairy specialist J O Tretsven notes cattle require salt beyond feed. In alkali districts chlorine in water may suffice, otherwise salt needs vary with cow size feed and milk yield. Babcock Carlyle estimate 0.75 ounces daily per 1000 pounds live weight plus 0.3 ounce per 10 pounds of milk per day. A 420 pound cow yielding 50 pounds of milk requires about 2.4 ounces daily.
