Capacity crowd fills Hart Wig Theatre for musical show

A large audience attended a three act amateur musical at the Hart Wig Theatre last Wednesday. The Dillon Choral Club and the Parent Teachers Association sponsored the event featuring old and new Negro melodies and spirituals. Continued on page 8.

Debate Pits Beaverhead and Bozeman In Dillon Match

Beaverhead and Gallatin County high school debating squads meet in Dillon next Monday night with the winner representing the district at the state meet in Missoula. The question is Resolved that the United States should adopt essential features of the British radio control system. Beaverhead debaters include Fidler Reeves Wheat and Bell. They have defeated Anaconda Great Falls and Boulder. Norman Holden left for New York City this week to attend to business matters.

Beaverhead county residents witnessed Union Pacific’s Streamlined train showcasing next decade’s locomotive advances. The sleek design and fast, comfortable interior drew large crowds at the Dillon depot as it traveled through on its Oregon Short Line route to Butte and back.

Mrs Waters Dead After Illness In Beaverhead County

Mrs Mary Waters wife of John Waters of Dillon died Sunday night at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. She was 72 born in England who came to the U S as a young woman and lived in Montana 42 years most recently in Beaverhead county. She ran a Rebichle store and had friends in Dillon. Surviving are her husband a son James Jenkins and stepson Ernest Waters. Funeral is 2 30 tomorrow at Merrill mortuary in Butte.

Deliveries From Postoffice Here Being Curtailed

Effective yesterday only one delivery of mail will be made on the carrier route embracing Washington and Pacific streets. Postmaster Harry J. Andrus announced the action by order of the federal department carrying out a national curtailment plan. The single morning delivery covers that route while usual deliveries continue in business and mixed districts.

Bonds Farm Loan Body Being Sold

F A Hazellbaker secretary treasurer of the Beaverhead Madison National Farm Loan association of Dillon reports the Farm Credit Administration governor says farmers and creditors welcome bonds of the Federal Farm Mortgage corporation now offered by the Federal Land Bank of Spokane to settle debts. The bonds trade near par and the New York market has seen them reach 100 percent. Officials expect bonds bearing 3 percent interest to sell at par or higher when the rate is set. Continued on page.

Two Autos Crash North of Dillon Injuring Two

Roland Goedert and Melvin Whitaker, salesmen from Missoula, suffered head cuts and minor injuries when their car collided with Dan Turner’s machine near the river bridge north of Dillon. Turner and his passenger Tom Sears escaped harm. both cars suffered heavy damage. The Ring duo from Dillon were cut and bruised when their vehicle left the highway near Melrose Monday night. the car was damaged.

Change of Highway in Centennial Approved

The Board of County Commissioners of Deaverhead County Montana met April 2 1934 in regular session. Actions include approving installment tax payments by the Boston Montana Mines Co and Montana Southwestern Railway. Canyon resort to open for 1934 season next Saturday

Beaverhead county amusement spot the Canyon resort 14 miles south of Dillon opens for the new season with a supper dance. Manager Paul E. Henneberry announces special music and plans a first public entertainment since the Legion dance two weeks ago. The resort, opened last year, drew many Dillon residents and visitors from the county.

Miss Robison to Lead Large Normal College Convocation

Sixty five student musicians will perform at the Normal college convocation next Wednesday. The program features Negro spirituals by the Choral club, a piano solo by Alicea Matson, pieces by the women’s chorus, a Peggy Connolly and Janet McKinley dance duet, a Gay Nineties medley by the glee club and chorus, and 60 singers in a medley. Ray Bowers Named Ranger of Ruby District

A. A. Simpson of the Beaverhead National Forest announced Ray Bowers succeeds H E Schwan as Ruby district ranger. Schwan was promoted to assistant supervisor of the Custer forest at Billings. Bowers previously led Jackson district duties and has forestry training from the University of Montana.

Puppet Show at Wise River Delights Local Audience

One of the season’s finest amateur events the Wise River school and Wise River Woman’s club presented a puppet show and quilt pageant Saturday night directed by W J Anderson. Pupils performed Cinderella and the quilt pageant featured old time songs and dances.

Dillon Woman Re elected State D A R Vice Regent

Mrs. Fred Woodside of Dillon was reelected as state vice regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution at Montana’s state convention in Billings. She previously served as state treasurer.
