National Bison Herd Proposed for Flathead Reservation
The American Bison society urges Congress to establish a national bison herd on the Flathead Indian reservation in northwestern Montana. A nucleus herd and fencing, funded by a $30,000 appropriation, would begin with 15 to 20 pure-blood bison, housed north of Ravalli near the Northern Pacific line. The plan follows a detailed 1997 study by Prof Morton J. Elrod and notes the need to protect the species from private ownership and Canadian herd losses.
