Methodist Class Grows From Six In DeWitt 1843
Rev John Roberts organized Method ism in DeWitt in 1843 with six members including Mr and Mrs 8 P Benton Mr and Mrs David Brown and Mr and Mrs Moses Gear. The group built its first church after 1850 on Church street and later formed the DeWitt circuit. A new church at 701 11th Street was completed in 1861, enlarged in 1864 65, and dedicated August 11 1865 amid debt worries that were overcome by a community fund drive raising 1155 60. The church soon planned a lecture room and Sabbath school space with a 500 subscription, and a grand audience room was praised as among the best in the county.
