Devils Lake Clean Up Sparks Shooting of Civic Leader
In Devils Lake a citizen crackdown on vice led to the shooting of Dan V. Brennan, deputy in the anti vice drive. Acting State's Attorney Traynor organized raids with deputies and citizens to root out liquor dens and bawdy houses, triggering arrests and a dramatic confrontation in Brennan's lobby. Brennan discharged a pistol but missed the attacker, who fled via a 20 foot drop. The incident intensified public support for the crackdown and the city’s renewal efforts.
