A new Western hotel, a 350000 building, opens in Devils Lake with fifty rooms and modern amenities. Steve Jones and Joseph Fondert lease and manage the property, aiming for high service standards and a plain yet sanitary design. The project involved local merchants donating land and support for the venture ahead of a formal gala on November 27.
Plans for a Sunday opening on November 27 remain tentative with a big dinner and a reception for the dignitaries of Devils Lake. Thanksgiving music, a Turkey Day special, and housing for visitors and locals without homes will mark the event, highlighting the hotel as a valuable addition and convenient for future large gatherings.
In district three the canvassing board faced a counting error while tallying votes for county commissioner. Maloney led by two, but a miscount showed 62 votes cast and 53 recorded, creating a tie at 26 each. Proposals ranged from drawing straws to renting the opera house for a staged contest with door money and film royalties.
Harry Breese who was arrested on a liquor law charge was bound over to the district court for trial on the blind pigging case. He posted $2000 bonds and disappeared after the September 20 raid, later being located and arrested in Fargo through local authorities.
Deputy Game Warden Thomas Turner led the arrest of Curt Haase and Paul Haase on a warrant issued by Deputy Sheriff Redmond for possessing musk rat hides. Felix H Routier longtime Devils Lake resident and former cashier of the First National Bank leaves Thursday for Portland Oregon to start a new life. He plans to buy an interest in a well established Oregon insurance business and will move with his wife who is visiting Michigan. Devils Lake laments the loss of the popular couple.
The Modern Woodmen of America held a session at the local lodge hall Tuesday with Thom as H Duffy speaking on lodge insurance. State Deputy Murphy attended and spoke, attendance was good, and a sociable with refreshments followed. The lodge plans active membership campaigns through the winter.
