Supt. Watkins of the Enforcement League rejects claims he "knocked" Devils Lake in state speeches. He defends reporting on Grand Jury cases, lauds two detectives for anti booze work, and credits Judge C W Buttz and the new city administration for a moral, clean up over the past two years.
Special Agent Henry A. Larson of the Indian Department announced an order affecting about 200 saloons in fifty nine towns within the Chippewa treaty of 1855 area must close by November 30. Liquor stores selling liquor face the same restriction. The move, tied to the Supreme Court regent decision upholding treaty prohibitions, was delivered to saloon operators by Larson and deputies during a district tour. Some outlets outside Bemidji were warned today. others will receive notice.
Archie Miller signed contracts to bring full Paramount service to Devils Lake. Starting Saturday November 21 the Grand will present two high class features weekly featuring national or international stars, with a feature added to the regular bill every Wednesday and Saturday night.
London reports Parliament was asked to approve a 125 million dollar credit to fund war through March. Prime Minister Asquith announced 57,000 British killed wounded or missing so far, and proposed raising forces to 2,186,400.
Elsie Janis is routed to Los Angeles to headline The Slim Princess and other features. The season will feature Macklyn Arbuckle in The Country Chairman, Mary Pickford in He Behind the Scenes and Mistress Nell, John Barrymore in The Man From Mexico, Tyrone Power in Aristocracy, Gaby Deslys in Her Triumph, William Farnum in The Sign of the Cross, plus Pauline Frederick and Florence Reed among many others. Ella Nord of Leeds visited friends in the city on return from Cando.
Grand jury under foreman Hon C A Dodge began its November term in district court with indictments against James Cummings J J Wilcox C T White George Chambers and William Irwin for bootlegging keeping intoxicating liquors and related offenses. Some defendants pled guilty including Herbert Becker petit larceny. J J Wilcox received a suspended six month jail term due to family hardship.
The November crop report from the Bureau of Crop Estimates outlines higher North Dakota outputs and prices this year. Corn rises to 13,100,000 bushels from 10,200,000. oats up to 64,904,000. wheat state total 83,049,000 bushels with price 97 cents. Potatoes up in production to 6,590,000 bushels at 40 cents, flaxseed down 140,000 bushels and price down two cents. National totals: wheat 2,710,000,000 bushels. price average 96.2 cents. Conditions in North Dakota better than national average.
District Court begins with eighty one civil cases while criminal matters shift to Grand Jury. Gram Construction wins $625 against Soo Railway. Br Shobe v Smith yields $555.80. C N Griffin sues John Tholim and Ed Ek with a directed verdict of $400. Horton Motor Co. v Brennan case noted. more trials slated next week.
