Cuthbert hides a crucial secret from his father and plans to tell Mr Strangfield first, while navigating school life, a strict English master, and the looming tension of his father’s authority. He prepares for a covert visit to Strangfield, then encounters a suspicious group of sailors and a cockney accented rogue on the road.
Cuthbert resists and is seized by Thompson Jenkins and others as tensions rise aboard the open yard near the Strangfield house. In the shipwrights yard, master shipwright Michael Strangfield and wife Jenny observe the bustling scene and the looming threat to their plans for two vessels to be finished by August under his contract with Wainwright.
In a sea side house Mrs Strangfield and her husband debate Jenny’s rumored flirtation with Mr Shaw while Jenny sits by the window, listening to their concerns about gossip and propriety before bedtime. Meanwhile Maloney the druggist endorses Chamberlains Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy as a safe home treatment.
