Ramsey county commissioners discuss bridge sites and construction. multiple sections propose 24 and 16 foot bridges with 16 foot piling, plus steel bridges bids from Fargo Bridge and Iron Co and Gorder & Son. Also appoints health officials, approves taxes and bills, and considers road grading funds and public notices.
The 1904 audit log lists payments to J B Turbor clerk, Jon McCormick commissioner, Gus Forstonga mileage, Fred A Baker mileage, EP Dey commissioner, Chile Andstsan mileage, totaling 6102.35. The board adjourned after approving these accounts with CHRIS ANDERSON as chairman.
The city council met Tuesday in regular session with all members present. The chief of police was told to fix cell doors and collect the day tax, including a reported poll tax of 100 dollars. C A Dodge was authorized to lay a drain on Walnut street under the street committee, and a joint project with Like township to build a road from the brick plant to Pitcher’s bill, not to exceed 200 dollars. Authority was granted to connect with the Seventh street sewer and obtain weather bureau water privileges. The artesian well committee was to find water for public troughs without hindering Devils Lake Improvement Co. The city treasurer’s bond was approved. a petition against Sixth street sewering was noted. The street committee to determine needed cement sidewalks and crossings for the year, and Judge Duell’s report was read and approved. County Superintendent notes: school census ongoing, June 21 countywide school election, village schools on summer recess, 21 teacher certification applicants, 35 rural teachers without prior county teaching experience, and per-child tuition funds allocated. Devils Lake receives the largest share $1,036.41. Cato the smallest $33.26. A teachers’ institute is set for June 20 in Devils Lake with experienced instructors planned to meet local needs.
Notices call for common schools to furnish teachers and rooms, with county superintendent contact. Permits to cut gray on school and institution lands for 1904 will be sold at public auction by the county treasurer at the courthouse, Devils Lake, at 1 am on Monday June 27 1904. The Collins Land Co offers a block of several thousand acres of non timbered forest reserve land via a special interior department agreement. An approved title abstract makes it equivalent to certified scrip. Interested parties should state acreage requested for quotations. Helena Montana.
