Fearful Japanese Assault Captures Nanshan Hill

Lokio May 28 report describes one of the bloodiest modern warfare clashes. Japanese forces pierce Russian lines at Nanshan, destroy mine wires, and push to within 200 metres before heavy losses halt charges. Russian batteries silenced earlier in the day.

Memorial Day Observance Honored Soldier Dead

Memorial day in Devils Lake observed with parades, speeches and ceremonies honoring veterans. The morning parade from city hall to the cemetery featured the Fort Totten Indian band, school pupils, G A R units, Spanish War veterans and civic groups. Afternoon programs at the armory included addresses by Rev. James and Rev. O F Jones, musical performances, recitations and grave decorations.

Memorial Day Parade Features Fire Department Display

The city fire department turnout drew decorated horses as their apparatus led a parade from the school house to Kelley avenue. Flowers adorned graves at the cemetery and a local quartet provided music while the Fort Totten band performed during the ceremonies.
