Old settlers picnic at Ayerst grove delights North Dakota crowd

A Saturday gathering at Ayerst's grove near Sweetwater Lake drew about 1500 settlers and locals. The event featured old settlers dancing to The Good Old Summer Time and The Irish Washerwoman, a fair ball game between Starkweather and Devils Lake, plus vivid notes on Ft Totten Indian school and farming efforts led by Superintendent Charles L. Davie. Postmaster Frank Maurer of Starkweather attended and spoke to pioneer progress.

Fort Totten Reservation Re survey for settlement slated

One year ago Congress provided funds to re survey the Fort Totten Indian reservation as original markings faded. The 230,652 acre tract has 187,746 acres allotted to Indians and 11,880 acres reserved for the military leaving about 82,000 acres for settlement. The reservation was established in 1867 and 1,132 Indians have taken out land rights.

Silk tile honors for North Dakota editorial group

A North Dakota Editorial Association committee sends J Small Eng Devils Lake a silk tile and a satin lined feather case with a silk hat as a token of appreciation for the 1903 Devils Lake excursion. They praise the editor’s efforts and joke about meeting President Diaz in Mexico City with the hat as a symbol of their goodwill.
