Disappearance of Gerald Avery Ended in Distress

Gerald Avery alias Stanley Mourten a Civil War veteran walked from North Dakota to Washington seeking a pension but was refused due to discharge flaws. Destitute and homeless, he stayed at the Temporary Home for ex-Union Soldiers and Sailors before leaving. Born in Garrison New York, Avery rose to First Lieutenant before a 1864 dishonorable discharge. Government relief requires Congressional action. He wandered begging, sleeping in barns and outhouses, aided briefly by sympathetic farmers. He may become a public charge, and local citizens urged congressional contact for relief.
