Fatal Collision Near Michigan City Injures Elevator Worker

A fatal accident occurred in Michigan City on a Saturday when elevator worker Austin Englewood stepped onto a railroad track and was killed by a west bound engine. His fellow elevator employee Egeleyd was struck moments later, hurled 30 feet, and died at the scene. Englewood, about 23, recently from Norway, leaves a brother and sister in Laverns Minnesota, with Banter Egeland of Bisbee notified by wire.

Matrimonial Happiness at Episcopal Wedding

A Wednesday evening ceremony at the Episcopal church united Mary Stenson and J H Haslam with Rev O F Jones officiating. The groom’s friend E P Page from Grand Forks and the bride’s sister Anna Stenson attended, followed by a wedding dinner at the bride’s home. The couple, popular local figures, receive many well wishes and gifts from relatives and friends.

North Dakota Guards Meet. New Officers Elected

Devils Lake delegates attended the North Dakota National Guard and Scottish Rite Mason meetings in Fargo with thirty candidates initiated. Major A Roberts reported on maneuvers with regular troops and a possible move from Chautauqua encampment to field maneuvers. New officers were elected with Lt Col Treamann as president and Bismarck set as the next meeting venue.

Jury verdict awards $300 in McPhail and Rogers case

The Inter-Ocean reports at last week’s press time that the jury found in favor of the plaintiff for $300 in McPhail and Rogers. Harram vs Tyedt favored the defendant, while Smith Zimmer man vs Peter Haley was decided for the defendant. Senton and Germaine Co. vs Glerum Roe & Anderson fell for the defendants due to no appearance. The court recessed and will reconvene when Judge Cowan, snowbound, returns. Flath vs Bailor is set to be called first.

Land dispute near Edmore decided for Hauser

The General Land Office reversed the Edmore case decision in favor of Clar ence Hauser after multiple reviews. The dispute dates to April 21, 1900 with prior local decisions for Sonetelie and contestation by J. B. Winewan and W. J. Anderson representing the parties.

Barry Case Heads to Fresh Trial in Ontario County

Judge Cowan visited Langdon for the Barry murder case after a hung jury. The last trial was before him. The case may be sent to another county for a new trial with a different judge in a new district. Barry and Cowan previously resided in western Ontario.

Remains Arrive in Devils Lake Then Laid in State

The corpse of Stephen Braathflower arrived on Wednesday afternoon’s train in Devils Lake and was carried to Maxonic hall where it lay in state until yesterday noon. S. C. Jones accompanied the body back from Arizona, and the funeral was held at 2:30 PM yesterday at the Masonic hall with Minnewaukan lodge No. 21 presiding, drawing a large gathering. Analysis by Prof Ladd of Fargo finds the blood stains are not human. Ramsey County authorities are advised to seek a second opinion if unsatisfied.

Fort Totten Lands Bill Introduced in House

A Washington dispatch reports the bill to amend the 1900 Devils Indians agreement. It sets land prices at 4 per acre for the first six months, 3 per acre for the next six, and 2.50 thereafter. The measure will go to committee at the next regular meeting Thursday.
