Big Piano Opens in Grand Opera House Block

The Chas L Nodine Piano Co opened last week in the Grand Opera House block with the largest stock in the state, offering Waltham pianos and others from $250 to $1,000. Mr Nodine leads a statewide sales force with branch houses, shipping six carloads of pianos to the city and wholesale operations nationwide. The Waltham Piano Player is carried, and showrooms boast matched cases and high quality instruments. Visitors are welcome to sample the stock and products on liberal terms.

Devils Lake Wins 1911 North Dakota Implement Dealers Meet

A party of Devils Lake boosters secured the next meeting for 1911, boasting it will bring about 1000 visitors from across the state. Led by C. C. Russell, locals and other citizens pitched the convention site, with each speaker allotted three minutes to name a city for the gathering. The result, after balloting, sets Devils Lake as the host city, with continuation noted on page eight.

Tragic Death of Devils Lake Clerk Thorson In Stable

Thomas Thorson clerk of court was found dead in a stable behind his East Third Street residence after a daylong search by friends. He had multiple knife wounds to the throat, and investigators cited declining health and mental strain, with a California letter said to have influenced the act. His daughter Hallie aided by Judge Cowan sought answers as relatives prepared funeral plans and awaited Mrs. Thorson’s return from California.

Longtime Bartlett postmaster and official Thorson dies

Bartlett mourns as former postmaster and county treasurer and clerk of court Thorson dies in tragic circumstances. He served as assessor in 1885, treasurer for four years starting 1896, and clerk of court from 1900 until death. A Mason and member of AOUW Eagles and Sons of Norway, his life combined public duty with service to fraternal orders. He held $2,000 aura in AOUW and $5,000 with Equitable Life.

Devils Lake City Council Regular Monthly Meeting

The regular monthly city council meeting was held at city hall with most members present except Aldermen Green and Halgren. The budget of bills was approved. Plans were ordered for reservoir covering and sewer linkage with cost estimates. Herman Rutten named city assessor to fill the vacancy left by Joe Foubert. A committee was appointed to inspect fire protection at the Locké-Gram block and opera house. An ordinance codifying Devils Lake ordinances was approved for publication.

Stenseth Chosen Ramsey County Clerk of Court

In a brief special session the Ramsey county commissioners unanimously elected Herman Stenseth to fill the vacancy in the clerk of court office caused by Thomas Thorson’s death. Other candidates included L. D. Snell Ed Routfer and others amid lively protests by supporters. Grand Forks attendees and local officials expect a pleasant term. a grand masked carnival and dance is scheduled for February 16 at the Grand roller rink.
