At the National Republican Executive Committee meeting in Washington it was decided to hold the next national convention in Chicago on June 21. Roosevelt received strong endorsement for the nomination and was seen as the likely choice with little opposition.
Sheriff Scofield of Ward County was jailed for ninety days by Judge Amidon after being held in contempt for attempting to influence a juror in a federal case. The judge condemned jury influencing and criticized the court’s early operations as political and wire pulling.
A petition to Washington requests a new mail schedule on the Starkweather to DeGroat route. Mail would depart Starkweather at 11 20 p m after the Farmer's railroad train arrives, go to DeGroat and return far on Evanston, then resume the next morning. The change aims to allow mail to be mailed before it becomes three days old.
Washington December 12 Representative Marshall filed a bill to secede the Devils Lake Indian reservation and open lands to settlement under the presidents proclamation. Settlers would pay 8 50 an acre with yearly installments and Indians receive 5000 for sections 16 and 36. The measure would enable immediate passage without Indian consent and net the state about 150000 from land sales. A similar Senate effort by Senator Hansbrough failed last year.
