The city council met Monday in regular session. Sewer contracts closed except for 200 to repair surfaces on third streets in spring. The council directs the city attorney to enforce ordinances. Jos. Denoyer becomes assistant city attorney in Townsend’s absence. The body plans to test ordinance validity if needed. A banquet at Sevilla followed.
Grand Forks federal grand jury indicts J. Murphy a Ward county political boss for false oath in a pension case where he served as attorney. The widow Grinnell, linked to alias marriages and a divorce in Minot, allegedly used misrepresented facts to secure a $1,800 pension and back pay with Murphy receiving compensation.
Devils Lake Public Schools lists students who scored over 90 percent in Friday December 4 written tests at the high school Plane Geometry and multiple grade arithmetic and history sections. Names include Anna Nelson Jos Glerum Anna Glerum Maud Sprague Ida Scrom gard Orvin Holme Josephine Maher and others across seventh eighth fifth and sixth grades.
The Minneapolis Journal offered two prizes for the Northwest essay contest with $15 and $7.50. Devils Lake High School earned second place among North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin entrants. The English class, praised for loyalty, begins a second contest set for March 18, 1904, with high hopes for further victory.
A rumor claims L Posey killed his hired man Shannon near Lawton but investigators found no body or conclusive proof. Sheriff Rutten and Attorney Anderson spent two days at the scene. Posey vanished after returning home, his wife noting odd behavior. Posey’s eccentricity and winter trips to Minnesota woods fuel suspicion, though no definite foul play has been established. Investigators say new developments may occur.
Jamee Scofield of Ward county was arrested for contempt of court while testifying in the Murphy case before federal jurors. He allegedly claimed to a juror that Murphy is a fine man and that the indictment and arrest were the result of spite. A. G. Bergland visited Lawton and recalled Tutor Ocema, suggesting a possible basis for murder rumors about Shannon.
