Prisoner Tells His Sad Story In Great Falls Court
James Smith once a government telegraph operator told Judge B Leslie and County Attorney Stephen J Cowley how drink ruined him. He faced a one year sentence for stealing a bottle of beer from the American Brewery plant, with prior petit larceny convictions. He spoke tearfully of family trouble, wandering life, and his failed attempts to resist drinking, saying he never meant to steal and that drink forced his actions. He admitted a clean record before arriving in Great Falls and requested no mercy, hoping treatment at the penitentiary would help. He is 60 years old.
