A special workshop next week at the Okaloosa County School Board office will cover state laws on current and future planning and include an updated hazardous waste presentation. Jointly led by the West Florida Regional Planning Council and the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation, the event features WFRPC executive director Dan Kramel and DER district manager Bob Kriegel. The public meeting runs 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Fort Walton Beach Board of Education meeting room on Lowery Place.
Preservation of Destin Inc agreed to screen a film on coastal problems in the area. POD board member Bill Stichler challenged a South Walton group opposing the Choctawhatchee peninsula coastal barrier designation, arguing it will not halt state funding for development. He cited Executive Order 81-105 urging growth management aligned with evacuation and hazard standards, and noted bridge work on U. S. 331 will endure despite a barrier label. Rudy Sutton supported the critique, recalling the 1979 Frederic hurricane and its impact on property and fill dirt costs, calling the land well elevated yet unstable.
Okaloosa County Waterways Advisory Board discussed a possible non designated anchorage for Destin Harbor after Holiday Isle developers objected to a formal safe harbor. A subcommittee of board members and property owners was formed to draft guidelines balancing public boaters access with private docks and preserving coastal property values. The panel will report back with proposals to avoid conflicts between docks and navigational safety.
Preservation of Destin board pressed developer on taller building allowance and environmental impact for the Destin Pointe Resort on Holiday Isle. Larry Martin outlined a model of plans with up to 799 units in buildings up to 160 feet, under protective covenants to limit density, and parking to be placed under structures.
