The Destin Fire Control District opens qualification from noon Sept 17 to noon Sept 21 for two four year board seats currently held by Jay Dunlap and Bill Burleson. No candidates announced yet per Okaloosa Elections Office. The vacancy left by Walter Adler is filled by Howard Horn whose term runs to January 1987.
POD To Discuss Harbor Pipe Preservation of Destin will chair a public meeting at Destin Elementary auditorium on Thursday Sept 20 to discuss Destin Water Users plan for a water pipe to Holiday Isle and area drainage concerns. DER regional manager Bob Kriegel will attend to answer citizens questions on the project and DER requires net positive environmental benefit before installation.
The Destin Log corrects a Sept 14 note stating DWU engineers filed an operational permit on June 24. DWU actually submitted the application on June 1 and received a June 25 request for additional information from the Department of Environmental Regulation. The paper regrets the error and any inconvenience.
DWU directors vote to launch a long range education plan for the public and stockholders following a dispute with the Department of Environmental Regulation over a submerged harbor pipe project for Old Pass Lagoon. Kriegel urges a credible grass planting program and says permit violations could lead to revocation.
Steven Robert Hagen of Destin, 20, was injured in a one car crash on Highway 98 near the Destin Bridge at 2 a.m. Friday while lighting a cigarette. Passenger Preston Kingure, 20, also of Destin, suffered serious but stable injuries. Hagen was charged with driving under the influence. Kingure was treated and moved to West Florida Regional Hospital in Pensacola. State trooper Mike Hulton investigated the crash.
