City Council approved the 1985-1986 budget of 1,157,700 on Monday night and set a rate of 1.5 mills. Public hearing yielded no comments as required by Florida statute. The meeting was held to correct an advertising error related to the millage notice.
Destin hosts its annual Fall Festival on Saturday at the Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy a ride in an antique car, hot dogs, flavored popcorn and sweets, and 25 cent games. Grand prize entries include weekends for two at Sandestin, Tops' Beach and Racquet Club, plus numerous other prizes. Tickets are $1 each.
A single engine plane crashed at Destin Airport on Saturday as it attempted takeoff toward the Gulf. Pilot James A. Carson of Memphis Tennessee escaped injury while the aircraft, after brake trouble and strong crosswinds, veered off the runway about 1,200 feet into a wooded area on airport property. Airport manager Coy Thomason said this was the first crash at the facility.
Beach authorities record a 24 unit tide setting at 0847 with involvement from DC noted.
The National Weather Service forecasts afternoon thunderstorms with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. South winds at 15 to 25 mph, with several hours of unsettled weather expected.

Officials monitored the threat as a tornado warning remained in effect and emergency centers tracked sightings.
The Destin Chamber of Commerce board unanimously approves a referendum for a tourist development tax. President Bob Lloyd says a four-member committee will present the issue to the public while Okaloosa County Chair Bill Peebles Jr. suggests defining the tax area and fund administration. The board supports a bed tax of one or two percent on hotel motel and some condo rentals to boost tourism.
Two applicants vie for one open AM frequency 1120 in Destin area. Harding of Shaker Heights Ohio seek daytime Christian radio. Louisiana resident Jean Hurley also filed. FCC will decide after hearing set.
City state and Destin Water Users panel on Tuesday backed creating a low lying sewer line along the north side of Old Pass Lagoon to curb harbor pollution from septic tanks. Twelve tanks currently drain near the harbor, forcing connections to the U.S. 98 sewer line is one option discussed though costly.
Destin faults the Destin occupational license ordinance for forcing professionals to buy two licenses. He pointed to lawyers who pay for a professional license plus an office license based on employees, even if solo operators. Resident Jane Moore backed him, urging relief to avoid perceived double taxation and possible court action if administrators fail to act.
