Coffin Capers Haunting Holiday Concert Weekend

Emerald Coast Wind Ensemble presents Coffin Capers with scenery sound effects acting and a magician. Performances tonight at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in Fort Walton Beach High School auditorium. Tickets $2. free for children six and under. Music includes Danse Macabre Night on Bald Mountain Ghostbusters and Dry Bones.

Percy the one-eyed pelican found at Sandpiper Cove

A Destin man found Percy the missing pelican walking on his Sandpiper Cove dock Wednesday morning. The Bird, nicknamed Percy, was in good health after a two week ordeal. Carlton Tucker said Percy was in better condition than expected and would have tales to tell if he could talk.

Roadwork to close Main Street between Post Office and Airport Road

City manager Jack Dorman warns travelers that the road from the post office to Airport Road will be closed during the day for utility work. Okaloosa Gas Destin Water Users and Center Telephone crews will dig and lay lines along the street.

Partly Cloudy With Rain Chance This Week

The National Weather Service predicts today will be partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain. Highs near 82 and lows near 68, winds east at 10 to 15 mph. The weekend should be fair, with a Sunday rain chance, and next Monday and Tuesday bring temps in the 80s with 50s at night.

Budget Cut Threatens Coast Guard Station Destin

The Senate voted to cut 200 million from the Coast Guard budget raising the possibility of belt tightening at Station Destin. Chief Petty Officer Glenn Francis says no current plan to cut operations but warns closures could occur if the larger cut stands. The Coast Guard could release thousands of personnel and decommission ships, while Destin’s 33 personnel on three boats operate “bare bones.”

Aeration mix touted as cheaper fix for Old Pass Lagoon

Biologist Jess Van Dyke of the Department of Natural Resources argues aeration mixing offers a short term, economical alternative to the Northwest Florida Water Management District pipeline plan costing 1.2 to 1.5 million. He says aerators inject oxygen from the lagoon bottom to improve water quality, while long term solutions should curb stormwater runoff and nutrient pollution.

Destin Okaloosa Island bed tax vote support from chamber members runs 86 in favor and 38 against with 135 ballots cast about 30 percent of members. President Bob Lloyd says education and strict admin of funds loom large and board to decide Monday at 5 15 p m after presentation of results.

Destin Sets Additional Budget Hearing After Ad Error

Destin will hold a second public hearing on the annual budget and millage rate after a legal advertisement typo. City Manager Jack Dorman said two words were omitted from the notice, changing it from Notice of Tax Levy to Notice of Tax Increase. The Sept 26 notice was incorrect in two spots and the mistake requires another meeting on Monday Oct 28.
