Okaloosa Bed Tax Council Formed By Week's End

Okaloosa County commissioners move to form a nine member bed tax council to map a proposed levy for tourism projects. The board includes elected city officials from Destin and Fort Walton Beach, the county commission chair, hotel motel and tourism affiliates, and non owner tourism members. The council will draft an implementation plan, hold hearings, and present a voter referendum next year.

Hearing Set For Proposed Dock Fee

The first public workshop on the windfall profits tax for boat docks will be at 7 p.m. at the Shalimar Courthouse Annex. The levy targets condominium and townhouse developers adding docks, not commercial marinas. A one time premium of 25 percent of added profit from selling a unit with a dock would be charged by the Department of Natural Resources.

HRS Seeks To Force Hookups To Public Sewer

The Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services filed suit to compel Clayton Swank to connect three Destin businesses East Pass Marina and Fuel Supply Boathouse Oyster Bar and Wet Sports Scuba Shop to the public sewer system. The trio shares a failing septic tank under Wet Sports Scuba Shop on U.S. 98 amid repeated complaints of raw sewage overflow. Swank agreed in May to pump out the septic system as a temporary measure. HRS followed with August notices and two more complaints.

Harbor Cleanup Week Launches in the City

Volunteers armed with trash bags launched the Harbor Cleanup Week to remove litter around the harbor. Destin Harbor Board leads the effort with Debbie Milenski noting strong community response and plans to repeat annually. Local businesses donate supplies and prizes for Sunday’s fish fry at the Community Center.

Council moves to regulate utilities and repair rules

Destin City Council Monday night voted to regulate utility work and seek future franchise agreements. The measures require 48 hours notice except in emergencies, mandate restoring streets to at least prework conditions, and bonding if not met. Officials cited chronic street damage and unseen subcontractor access as problems and emphasized safety.
