The annual Children’s Christmas Parade sponsored by the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce will march Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. on a new route via First Street Eglin Parkway to Mariner Plaza. The Cinco Bayou Bridge will close to spectators and a No Throw zone will be set between Fourth Street and Hollywood Boulevard. The route shift followed months of study by a committee including police, city officials, chamber leaders and the Okaloosa County School Board. The plan aims to curb past parade problems and improve crowd control and spectator space while keeping U.S. 98 open with Beal Parkway as a north-south detour.
November brings National School Volunteer Day and American Education Week across Destin Elementary and county schools. Administrators praise volunteers, promote an open-door policy, and host activities including a poster contest and student council biographical readings of famous educators.
