Adler in Jail in Crestview after rejection of appeal

Destin resident Mary Anne Adler turned herself in to authorities Thursday evening and is in Okaloosa County Jail. The appeals court denied her second degree murder appeal this week. Her attorney John Harrison said they likely will not appeal further. Adler is expected to serve about half of a 15 year sentence for killing her husband Joel Adler in June 1984.

WPAN-TV 53 Faces Uncertain Shutdown Decision

Officials at WPAN-TV Channel 53 scrambled Friday morning over potential closure. Chief Engineer Richard Gilbert cited uncertainty and confusion as meetings continued amid rumors the station could go off air at midnight Sunday.

Destin Community Center Approves Christmas Tree Plan

The Destin Center board unanimously approves placing the city’s first official Christmas tree outside the building. The tree will be lit after the December 13 Christmas Parade, with power supplied by the Center. Children are invited to make ornaments for the tree.

Destin Community Center Proposes 50-Year Lease

The Destin Community Center Board approved a proposed 50 year lease of center property to the city with a $10 annual fee. The agreement requires the city to build and maintain substantial improvements including a 10,000 square foot basketball gym, stage, kitchen, and a board room for the center. The document will be revised by attorney Matt Burns before presentation to the Land Acquisition Committee.

Local merchants blame the four lane bypass for sharp cuts in walk in traffic along Old 98. The Park Pit, Pork Pit, SunNSand Motel and Sea Oats Motel report steep declines in daily sales and occupancy as off season demand collapses. One business notes buyers have vanished from the highway corridor.

Henderson Family Fears Land Devalue Under Plan

Will Merrill, son-in-law of Barney Henderson, criticizes a Moreno Point land-use plan that labels most undeveloped Henderson land as low-density. Omar Aleman of the Drug Enforcement Administration told a Sandestin audience that drug problems start at home. He criticized social acceptance of alcohol and diet pills and urged community involvement for prevention, warning that every American is affected by drug abuse.

Diver Nearly Dies After Contest Win

Howard Allen Scott of Birmingham won the Destin Open Spearfishing fifth annual men’s division. He suffered decompression sickness after diving Saturday and was treated in a hyperbaric chamber in Panama City, explaining bends occur when ascent is too rapid and nitrogen forms bubbles in the blood.
