Destin Fire District reports 1986 midyear calls and losses

The Destin Fire Control District logged 332 calls in the first six months of 1986 per the state fire marshal. Fires numbered 62 with $74,777 direct property losses and no injuries or deaths. The department also responded to 157 rescue calls, 32 false alarms, and 65 other calls. Across the state 25,728 fires caused $60,910,703 in property damages, with nearly 500 injured and 66 deaths.

Diseased trout linked to pollutants in Choctawhatchee Bay

Florida State University biologist Dr. R L Skip Livingston reports White Trout in Choctawhatchee Bay show fin rot potentially caused by pollution. He notes two months of a 12 month study to model the bay and assess ecological health. If pollution is the culprit, measures must stop it to protect the estuary.

A state Department of Education survey urges expansion of Destin Elementary to 750 students, adding six intermediate classrooms two special education rooms a multi purpose room and media center renovation. The district would use state funds if recommended by the state, with completion hoped before next fall.

Condo Sales Lag for Fort Walton Beach Board in 1985

Fort Walton Beach Board of Realtors reports Okaloosa County single family home sales remain strong while condo sales lag. Florida Realty Inc agent Bob Hutchison says condo sales are solid not weak and 1984 set a record with 1,848 closings. He projects 1,500 plus closings for 1985 based on 1,320 through Sept. 30, noting closings trail actual sales by two months to two years.
