Algae Bloom Raises Alarm Over Lake Bell-Aire
DER officials say a large 150 by 100 foot algae bloom in Destin's Lake Bell-Aire may have multiple contributing factors. Stormwater runoff from Destin Water Users ponds and fertilizer use could be elevating nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, with tests planned to identify algae type and nutrient levels. Residents report a yellowish matting bloom that has deterred fishing and raised concerns of fish kills.
